I think we have a great firm in a lot of ways, but plenty of room for improvement. Our compensation model for the audit practice os way behind the industry and it diminishes the growth capacity, tax is killing it financially but needs serious technology investment and advisory is just getting hot with building our brand awareness in the market place for our consulting capabilities since we are still largely looked at as a nuts & bolts accounting firm.
I do love working here as well and I’m committed to long term building my career here, but I also think giving praise when it isn’t due will hurt the firm more than it will help it because then we won’t work towards improving our flaws.

I had two friends come over from BDO and they both said they worked way more hours and made a lot less at BDO, so for tax in the Bay Area this definitely doesn’t hold true.

What was the year by year progression like from 110 to 175?
I’ve seen been BDO let go of too many high performing home grown professionals for “yes man”. EY is the best firm to work for in my opinion.

These are so off base that its pretty obvious you're either in the clique that gets everything they want or you are just trying to convince people to hire on. Busy season hours have yet to stop, upcoming talent is almost non-existent and unless you're in the clique you aren't going to see the "A" players. Given shortages, the solution is to farm out the work to India or South Africa but that ends up costing the manager of any engagement more time and stress as the quality of the work is first year at best. Heaven forbid they actually fire the bad clients like the upper management keeps saying they are going to do. As for recognition, they recognize the party people but not the people that produce quality work. This has resulted in the firm bleeding talent from the manager level and above as they are tired of the reality that is BDO. But hey, the popular managers that are up for promotion are gtg since they bought their teams booze and the team loves them for it.
Many places are full of politics, not just BDO. But yes, I wish they stopped treating us like idiots.
Hours have been insane and quality of new hires is embarrassing... outsourced work ends up costing more than in house... they promise efficiency, but in some lines of service, the processes are so rusty... trying to incorporate small little clients from countless mergers at BDO costs and rates is stupid...
There are resources, but not time to take advantage of them.
