I had this same question last week and I did the opposite of what was suggested by majority. I went on to have a dialogue with the HR of X, telling her I got a counter offer from Y.
I told her that X is my top choice and has been from the start. That said, I didn't want to take a heavy financial cut either. As I started sensing some favorable comments from her end I went on to solidfy my stance telling her that I am the best they can have. Put in strong points.
On Friday they revised my compensation and increased fixed by 11% on my current and overall beating Y's offer.
Why things were in my favor -
1. The HR herself mentioned that since my joining was <3 weeks away, we were renegotiating otherwise they don't do this
2. My interview was very good
3. For a finance guy, I have a lot of tech skills that they needed
4. I kinda built a good rapport with this HR and was pushing politely
I know people say it might be unethical, unprofessional and has a risk of the offer revoked, I wouldn't think that way. You are renegotiating in good faith and not trying to create a seesaw effect. Promise them an instant yes if they meet your quote.
My advice would be to go for it. Without an attempt, you certainly won't have here the profile and money both. Plus, you also have a backup. Worst case scenario, they'll say "this is the best we can do". All the best!
Once you get a better offer and you don't plan to interview more. Then you can go back to your favorite company and start negotiating.
Yes you can. Many companies don't agree the first time saying that's the max they can give. Showing them a counter offer seems to magically increase their limit!
Yes you can always renogotiate that. Some company's though have a upper cut off based on the experience but they will try to negotiate the variable pay or joining bonus. But no harm in asking
Yes you can. But it total risk and depend upon requirements. Reject the offer by saying u got better opportunity then HR will call you to check the reason. You can negotiate with HR then. If the requirements is urgent and there is No backup then HR will agree
Renegotiating an offer after accepting is unethical and even if you join, it will hurt your reputation. So, big no.
@Analytics Manager 1
And how would you know? I served in my current company for around 2 years. Have my reputation intact.
I currently have an offer of 20.5 LPA & about to receive 2 more of around 22 & 25 LPA. And I know that I can get the choice of my company along with the offer I desire.
Exactly! I accepted it thinking I can re negotiate later :(
What if they don't reply within the time limit to accept offer? Do we accept it or not?
Similar situation..1st company has better profile but 2nd and 3rd company has better CTC..will try to renegotiate next week with company 1
Give us the update what happened next.
I'm also waiting for a response for this.
How much CTC you got?
I think the best way would be to avoid a hard negotiation or bargaining; however, put forth your case objectively and politely, stressing on your interest to working with company A, else what could have stopped you from accepting any of the competing offers? The HR would be facing this scenario every year and would also have a standard solution/process in place. Being upright and candid always pays off!
