Comp check. Hourly rate went from $395 to $425. Billed 1700 hours. Comp went from $135k + $20k bonus to $141k + tbd bonus. I’m in commercial litigation in a LCOL. Am I fairly compensated or underpaid? Thanks.

That’s very low even for LCOL at 9yoe. Hard to say without knowing your actual collections but assuming 1/3 of 425 at 1700 target, you should be making $200k plus (and that’s low for 9yoe).

like

Agreed, all in should be around 200k+. But I disagree 200k is low for 9YOE, especially in LCOL — it seems pretty standard for even HCOL if you’re not in the biglaw bracket. There’s a huge jump down in comp when you downshift to the small firm model billing 1500-1800 and being paid on a percent of your billables.

My NVA was approx $540k. I don’t have the precise percentage, but I believe it was roughly 95%.

How many years of experience?

like

9 total (mixed bag): 2 (personal injury); 4 (doc review); and 3 (commercial lit).

Depending on size of firm, for LCOL I say that’s standard.

like

I was in a LCOL market, 25 attorneys, making 75K as a 5th year. My mentor was a 12 year and made 140K. I left to move closer to family and am now in a totally different market/firm size but hopefully that helps?

like

Underpaid. He should be more at around 180K based and his bonus should be more in line to get him to the 230K

Hi all!
Would love some insight on how you went from an HR assistant/coordinator to an HR Generalist. I’ve been in the HR world for 8 years, and only in the last 2-3 have I really done real HR work. The first company I was at didn’t have a solid HR team so I don’t really count that. I feel like I’m ready to take on more responsibility and learn more. And of course make more money.

I have looked into getting SHRM certification. But should I go back to school and get my masters in Hr?

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.

Thoughts on sending out assignments over the weekend? I work a lot on weekends, but I don’t expect associates too. A friend recently mentioned this isn’t the best since seeing the assignment may create unnecessary stress and anxiety. So, what say you? Am I terrible partner?

I recently had a specialist partner send me a fairly nasty email after I (a transactional first year) was told to ask them to review something ASAP that had clearly been on my partner’s radar for over a week.
