This is a pretty common career path, albeit one I’ve mostly seen in different order (like after some time post-McK, post-industry)
Honestly, just try it. What’s the worst that happens? As long as you own the narrative, it’s not like your skills and experience disappear.
Separately, if you’re at all nervous about your ability to switch if things go sideways in search, try to make it to 2 years at McK. As much as I hate to dispense boomer advice, older ex-McK you encounter through course of your work (search or looking for industry job) view 2 years as some meaningful threshold.

You’re welcome! Pre-MBA & consulting, I worked for a search adjacent firm run by a bunch of ex-MBB folks that is now owned by Heidrick.
It was such a fun industry. While I’m no longer in it, I would probably go back for the right opportunity.
Happy to chat. I’m at one of the firms you mention. Very similar path, love it and will be here a long time. Search is an incredible business, but is not for everyone.
C2 would you still be open to chatting? Can I DM you?
That's very helpful and useful advice, thanks everyone!! I've decided to leave the firm already so will leave with ~1.5 year tenure. Breaking into a corporate role in a management position after a switch to search might be challenging, at the same time, I don't want to miss out on the opportunity to switch
Hello, how’s your experience after making a switch? Would you mind sharing?

This is vague. What is your YoE, skills and current level at McKinsey ? McKinsey is one company, industry is everything else. So what industry exactly ?
It’s not the army, that you will never be able to switch . People change careers all the time
I got 7 years industry experience in energy, not quite manager level yet followed by 1.5h at McK currently Snr Associate. My main worry is not to be able to use McK as launching pad for a career in corporate now
I would imagine you are close to Manager promotion at McKinsey and regardless of what you decide, recommend you get that promotion first.
