I would hate it. I've had one interview in which they asked me a question like that — though it was for an in-house role, not agency. I BSed a decent response but it was pretty frustrating, because that's not usually how the creative process works... at least for me. I need to sit with the brief, do some research, spit out some dumb ideas, then eventually come up with something solid. Unless they're asking how you would handle a "real-time moment" on social or something, it just seems like an unrealistic/unfair test.
That would be a good sign of somewhere you don't want to work.
If they paid me for it.
If it was a question meant to be answered in a few sentences on the spot I don't think I'd mind. It would help show someone's thinking process. What I hate are the take home test assignments, those are bullshit, especially for creatives.
I won't take a copy test. I won't give you free work. If I'm sitting accross from you in an interview, you should've already seen my book. If you have questions, ask. If you don't know what you're looking at, you're starting to lose me. If you haven't seen my book at all, I'll thank you for the office tour, tell you I hope we cross paths again some time (We won't.), and I'll shake your hand farewell.
I think it's great. Depending on how open the prompt is, it can tell a lot about a person's process, thinking, and taste on what and how they present work - sometimes portfolios fail to show that.
I would love it, but if the candidate is nervous and feels as though they are being tested, then you might not see their true potential.
@OP That would make it more reasonable but I still would hate it.
Not a creative but I love this stuff because it lets me shine way more than talking about myself does
Isn't that what my portfolio is for?
This is the double standard - this is almost the norm in strategy roles. 10-15 minutes to answer an existing problem (not free work because I've already solved it) - I want to see your thinking to a real probleM, CUTS THE BS in your resume.
I've been doing this for a while for strategy roles - I get a better read on candidates, have very few bad hires. and to the one candidate who gave me a better solution than we delivered to the client - we sure as hell hired her.
(Also helpful because a lot of times you can't publicly share strategy work in a portfolio esp if it has any client data)
So, to rephrase the question. If it was asked in an email before you had a physical interview. How would you feel?so you had some time to think of an answer.
(Ideally given ahead of the interview though)
Fuck that shit. I'm not for free work.
I can't pay my rent in compliments.
Understandable sc1. What it'd it was part of the emails preceding an interview? Something like "first thoughts, what is a creative solution?".
