Define good spec. I try to do the best job possible within budget constraints on the first pass.
Two drafts? Luxury. First draft is the only draft. Rarely had pushback to change anything beyond some inane stuff. Mostly it is the partners who do not follow the technology that have me to redraft stuff. If the partner is hands off never had pushback from clients.
There are a lot of different situations, so this can be tough to answer. It doesn't matter how many drafts you go through in the firm (relatively speaking), but it does matter if the client is sophisticated and what the client sees. If you have a fixed fee, to me this usually means a bigger company client. You have to know your client very well. If you are trying to keep that client, you always do your best work and take the hit as a "loss leader" for more lucrative work. Keeping up your reputation as a good drafter has always been my first goal. You do not know how a fast-assed draft or final application can hurt you. One big client I have has fired many patent firms due to this. I've been with them for many years. Of course, this all may be easier said than done depending on your firm.
Yeah for a pros only firm application drafting is one of the more lucrative items (of course opinion work/other non routine things are more lucrative) so you want to stay within the budget if possible. Of course reputation is key - it's the best way to get new clients and keep the ones you have - but so is profit if you're at a boutique. In big law it's a different story.
I don't take as much pride in my first draft as the second draft :)
I don't do fixed fees usually, but first draft is usually pretty clean. I work with inventors on 2-3 drafts of claims before drafting the spec.
Regardless of the substance of an application I take pride in an application being properly formatted and organized. Setting a document up properly on the first draft can save a ton of time down the line if revisions are needed.
