Currently a first-year litigation associate at a biglaw firm in my preferred city. Considering applying for a two-year clerkship with a senior district judge. The judge has 3 clerks, so I assume she has a reasonable caseload, and she’s in the district I’m currently practicing in (but not the same city). Is clerking worth it for me? Does the judge’s senior status impact the prestige/resume value?

Just apply. You’re probably not getting it. So prepare yourself for that. But the experience is better than anything you’d get in the private sector.

It’s a resume builder for sure. But to learn how a judge actually considers and decides a motion, especially a dispositive one, is experience you can get nowhere else.

Whether a judge is senior or not should not be a consideration the vast majority of the time. Firms won’t care. And it’s oftentimes better when they are, for reasons that have already been stated.

The only time it might not be a good idea is when the judge only has like 30 active cases. But even then that would be a pretty chill clerkship lol

like

If you really want to clerk (as opposed to just build your resume), I would say yes. Two years is a commitment but careers are long (!), and there is no better time to clerk than when you’re starting out. In terms of prestige, that totally depends on the judge. If they’re senior status that likely means they’ve been on the bench for awhile so have built up respect and have a large network of former clerks. And my guess is if they have three clerks they have a full caseload (I believe case numbers can dictate how many clerks a judge gets). My last thought is that it’s really helpful to work a year or so before clerking so you have a better understanding of what’s going on. Good luck!

Apply. It’s worth it.

I clerk for a senior district court judge and love it. My judge meets the trial hours for senior status about halfway through the year, so we’re pretty busy. If you have good relationships with your judge and co-clerks, it is truly one of the best professional experiences you’ll have.

like

Definitely do it especially if you like research and writing and working on something different every day. I did a fed dist. clerkship for a year and my judge has 3 law clerks. Very reasonable work load with 3 clerks. I liked it so much I decided to do a state supreme court clerkship after.

Hi everyone,
I relocated with my family to Ireland recently, one month ago, and while I got a lot of screening calls with recruiters, I did not hear back from any of them after our interview. I am still on the process of getting my work permit and I am very clear about this during the interviews, but I suspect that this is the reason why I am not getting any call back. Any tips on the first screening call with recruiters? Should I touch base with them after our interviews?

I’ve been at my clerkship for 5 years (4 with a different judge) and one with my current judge, and I heard horrible things about him before starting, but I assumed they were exaggerated. Turns out they’re all true, and I’ve had to start therapy to deal with him and the incredibly toxic environment. I’m trying to get out ASAP b/c he also has a history of firing clerks without cause or notice, but I think I’ll only be able to give two weeks notice if i get the job I’m interviewing for. Thoughts?

I went to a T14 law school, got great grades and glowing recommendations, and wrote (what I thought was) a great writing sample. But I got rejected from all 70 federal clerkships I applied to. The only thing I can think of is: I took a non traditional route after law school and did a 2 year public interest fellowship in a niche field of administrative law. The rejection gave me a lot of self hatred. I still really want to clerk. Any advice? What is wrong with me? I feel like a failure.
