Dilemma. Should I:
1. Stay put: great agency name, big fun clients, lower pay, no promotion in sight for at least a year.

2. Jump: senior title, $40K raise, agency is okay but not top-tier, clients are meh for now but could rotate onto better ones after a few months.

Take the title and big pay bump. Big fun clients and agency name recognition can get old pretty fast but being able to pocket that extra cash for the future definitely doesn't.

Scenario 1 sounds better for your book. If you’re not strapped for cash and can wait it out for a bit, I’d stay. I’d also take a look at the alum of agency 2 and see if any of them ended up in places you respect, if not it might not be the best move.
It really depends on what your career goals are and if it’s good for your long term plan.

I did the jump from a top 10 agency to a middle of the road place chasing a title and it was an absolute fight every time getting anything decent made. The culture wasn’t very inspiring.

But does the one opportunity outweigh the many coming your way at current agency? Personally I think it’s better to be around people who inspire you to push the work, and people who will provide better networking opportunities in the future. If someone you work with sees your work ethic and potential, they’ll call on you in the future when they move to another great shop.

You seem junior based on your title. I did the same jump based on the same odds when I was an AD and have regretted ever since. Beef up your book and money and better opportunities will fall in your book. Mid work can get you stuck there forever and it’s a painful long way out

Saw your post in the other bowl 😊 some good replies there. Personally it depends how much that extra cash would improve your quality of life, plus any other benefits that could be a gamechanger (better vacation, tuition reimbursement, health package). Beyond that, if you have a chance of making better work at your current agency, especially with a solid team and creative freedom, I’d hang tight. Given where you are and at your level, you sound highly employable and I doubt this will be the last agency to reach out to you!

It’s tough to be a top creative brought in to turn around a mid account. An uphill battle for sure. But could be worth it. I’d chat with creatives currently at this agency and those who have just left to weigh your options. A W&K alum just got hired to take over my role at my last agency and I still can’t believe how they were duped, good luck to them 😅 but maybe the money was worth it, who knows

Ahaha yes 😊 and you give a fair point, honestly the thing I keep going back to. The challenge at my current place is that there's a lot of internal competition, and not everything makes it to production. In reality I'm not sure how much meaningful work would actually get produced in the next six months. It might end up being more lower-funnel stuff than big brand moments.

Whereas at the new place, I know at least one big budget project would ship, not the sexiest category, but real produced work I can own. The plan would be to use it as a stepping stone, stay around 8-10 months, and then make the move I actually want. I'm just hoping top shops would still want me after a stint there, that's the part I'm less sure about, you know? People keep saying it's easier to go from great shop > great shop... than mid shop > great shop.

Read through your comments and sounds like top tier shops is your goal? If so, I might stay put and keep an eye out for roles at your goal agencies. If it were me I would absolutely jump ship for the money. I could care less about fun and big named clients and I’m More focused on money and work life balance. I work to live not live to work. Some people are interested in climbing that ladder and that’s okay too! It’s just where you are in your life right now and what you want to achieve personally. Either way good luck with your decision!

The money will come. How certain are you that at your current place there’s no raise to come in the next 6-12 months?

Pretty certain and I cannot say why here ahaha. Seems like another better scenario could be to wait till a good shop opportunity comes up

I was hired within the last year as a site supervisor. I did well my first few projects with the company. They asked if I’d be interested in transitioning into a construction manager role. I agreed. Now I still am the site supervisor on projects but I’m also doing all the construction manger duties on the project as well. Essentially 2 jobs for one salary. We have yearly reviews in December but no talks of raise have been discussed. Any help on approaching this to my boss?

Are there any fundamental differences between a salary negotiation during the start (applying for the job) vs. Salary negotiation during a performance review (you’ve been employed for x time and looking for a raise). Hey everyone. I found out we are expecting our first child and I’m really nervous. I got into consulting one year ago and I’m up for promotion this year. With timing of our performance conversations I would have to inform I’m pregnant before outcomes - then shortly after the promotion effective date I would go on a leave for due date. I’ve worked really hard and I’m worried our wonderful news will throw chances with this :(- also if I don’t get promoted pretty sure it’s up or out. Any advice?

Hi everyone, I’m an architectural designer (from Europe) with 1.5 yrs experience. I’m working for a practice in San Francisco, full-time from the office, getting 25 an hour. It is so expensive to live here, I am struggling to make things work. Is this a normal salary for someone of my experience or should I ask for a raise? I don’t want to be greedy but it’s so expensive out here… Thank you 🌈

When I moved in-house a year ago as a BigLaw mid-level, I took a 45% pay cut, far more than I was comfortable with (although I was fine with a 20-30% cut). I took the job because it was a great role and I was focused on making the jump in house and developing the skills I wanted, which required me moving away from my firm practice area. Now that my year-end review is coming up, how do I ask my company for a significant pay raise (not just a 2-5% inflation-matching raise)?

I have my annual review next week. Starting my 7th year at the current job. 13+ years in the field. But my current company is a nonprofit. They are great. But annual raise has always been 2%. So as a tenured SLP, I feel quite underpaid. But I honestly don’t know what is fair - especially for the region (Midwest) and in my speciality (pediatric outpatient rehab). My company has given me a promotion without a raise. Any suggestions on how to deal with this?

Little background:

Asked for promotion in late 2020 - was required to skill up, after skilling up, asked again about when I'll be promoted and was denied because there is no "vacancy" for it.
Got my annual hike in Oct 2021 without the promotion. I asked HR last week again and got a random announcement email saying my promotion is w.e.f Oct 2021. ( and no raise for the newly promoted role).

I was hired on with a company at the same time as my male coworker. We work the exact position, different projects.
I asked him flat out what his salary was when he hired on. His salary is at minimum 15% more. He’s never had a raise.
Neither one of us had any experience in this specific position but he didn’t even have experience in the field, which I did.
I requested a performance and salary review because it’s my annual review time anyway. Best way to address this? Also applying elsewhere.
