Its pretty simple. A competent president would have put a national plan in place for testing and supply of PPE.
A competent president wouldn't have made mask wearing a culture war issue.
So on and so on. All those together would have lead to lower daily cases. Lower daily cases would allow for actual contact tracing. With actual contact tracing then we could have a more normal economy.
Oh EM, you were so close to understanding. Do you know what drives the fear of the virus? The virus. The best strategy for the economy is also the best strategy for fighting the virus — you must contain it.
Do you know what contains the virus? Having a coordinated national response, endorsing the efficacy of and requiring the use of masks, not calling the virus a hoax, and massively ramped testing and contact tracing capabilities (see South Korea)
You are essentially arguing that this is all a hoax fueled by the MSM and that we’d be fine to just reopen now — which is unsupported by the daily new cases and deaths data.
Again, why have European and Asian countries been able to reopen, but we haven’t? Is the MSM spreading the virus also?
OP, why do you think the economy tanked? You seem to reject the premise that better virus leadership would have led to better economic outcomes, so what did Trump do wrong?
Here’s another way to look at it - Clinton inherited Bush’s crappy economy and led the gigantic expansion in the 90s. Obama inherited other Bush’s crappy economy and led to gigantic expansion in the 2010s. Now Biden will inherent Trump’s shit economy and your question is what will a Democrat do better? Bro, Democrats have been doing better for the last 30 years!
But OP, if fear is driving the tanked economy (which I agree), let’s look at Republican positions on things:
1. Reopen as quickly as possible. How has that worked out in Florida?
2. Add liability protection to businesses (Mitchs redline). How is that supposed to help me overcome fear of getting sick and going back to businesses?
3. Will he / won’t he mask wearing
4. Coordinated attacks on medical experts
5. Retweeting fringe conspiracy doctors
6. Remaining adamant there is a cure out there despite clear scientific proof
Trump plays a great game of a shotgun approach. He says a a million things out of both sides of his mouth, then you’re willing to give him credit for the things he got “right” without needing to acknowledge everything he got wrong. When the president says something that then has to be walked back, it leads to more uncertainty and fear. Not sure why you can’t / don’t see this as part of the problem.
So why are European and Asian economies able to reopen, but not the US?
Why are you comparing economic measures (recession) with the stock market (bull market)? You do realize those are different, right? You do realize we are still in a recession, right?
And please — the economic conditions you credit him for were inherited from Obama. Or do you have any evidence that his actions significantly affected employment metrics? And no, it was not the stupid $1.6T tax cut — economists have already shown that minimally impacted the economy and was a gigantic waste of money at the end of a growth cycle
Believe what you want to believe, but you should stop spewing ignorance — it’s not good for the country or your reputation.
Do you even have any support to your claim that Trump’s actions uniquely contributed to unemployment dropping from 4.7% to 3.5%? Seems like a continuation of a trend to me, and could be easily explained by a continuation of one of the longest expansion cycles in modern history.
“It’s a pandemic”. Guess you’re not interested in thinking about why other countries are faring better and not having to take on as much debt. But wheeee we momentarily got down from negligible unemployment to super negligible unemployment!!
Are we still on “dem” vs “republican”? I thought we moved on to “reasonable to a fault” vs “asshat” regardless of the color they run?
Our economy would be in a better position if Pence were president.

Worse. Especially since late 2015. Definitely now.
Thank you for your astute analysis

Historically Democratic presidents are better for the economy than Republicans. Republican policies tend to be incredibly erratic and lead to crashes and recessions.
