Yes and no. Don’t take this the wrong way. If we did a better job of standing with Blacks we wouldn’t be as overlooked. That fact that we are trying to call a difference, we are creating our own barriers. Black people wouldn’t kick us out the room if we joined forces with them. Support them/us and they’ll support us right back ✊🏾✊🏽✊🏼
So we have to latch on others to get noticed? We are not worthy to be heard on our own? We don’t have enough clout to get our voice and cause heard? In case you haven’t noticed, we are the forgotten minority in this country and attitudes like the one you have is why. We Latinos don’t take a back seat to no one and have enough clout and impact to make our voice heard. Accepting what is taking place is not right and will further cement our status as the forgotten minority. We are overlooked because of attitudes like the one you have.
I guess I don’t know how that can be possible. Anti-racism, though it absolutely centers Black people (as it should), extends to establish protections for all people impacted by racism + racist ideas. There is racial diversity within Latinos as well.. Black, indigenous, etc. We’re not a monolithic group and there’s hierarchy within our communities as well—which needs to be addressed and challenged. I think anti-racism includes all these different identities and experiences. When we lift our most marginalized and underrepresented, we inevitably lift the rest of us. Can you share more on why you might be feeling left out?
A1 - we are absolutely the forgotten minority and anyone who doesn’t see that has their head in the sand. Your comment on that it should focus on one minority is offensive and myopic. Who are you to trivialize the discrimination Latinos have faced for decades in this country? Does it not mean as much as what other minorities have gone through? I see the lack of attention on Latinos each and every day. Hispanic Heritage Month kicked off and you don’t see reference it it outside of Univision (one very very small example of many). It’s sad that you don’t see this and that you are okay with it.
Are you guys raising issue? It is a fact but how do you elevate it???
I think the conversation is focused around Black people and the Black experience and rightfully so. The US is directly responsible for the subjugation and relegation of Black people. White people created this problem and the onus is on them to solve.
Afro Latinos are included in this fight and for the rest of us, we need to stand in solidarity with the Black community. It’s divisive to start saying well, what about us? We need to see the bigger picture and start holding these companies accountable and putting pressure on them to do more than just provide lip service regarding D&I.
Latinos also need to organize more and start talking among the racism within our own communities.
PwC1 - that’s an interesting point of view and reinforces why Latinos should not feel like they have to latch on to prove their cause. You’re essentially saying Latinos should take a back seat, what kind of pathetic attitude is that?
First of all, Latino culture, the issues we face and the values we have are unique and worthy of fighting in of by themselves. What kind pathetic attitude is that in which you say we should take a back seat? News flash for you, we are not being included in many of these diversity initiatives and attitudes like yours is why. Do you think the NAACP cares about the plight of Latinos? Do you think the BLM movement cares about Latinos? The values of the BLM movement are actually contradictory to core Latino values.
This country while not perfect, has provided many many opportunities for African Americans, Latinos and people of kinds. Playing the victim role will only get you so far and that is not what we should do, we should stand up for what we believe and fight for the issues impacting our communities independently of other causes or we will continue to be left behind.
