This is why I work with kids who are old enough to blow their own nose and wipe their own...face.
This reminded me of the Bloodborne Pathogens video our district shows at the beginning of every school year. Then they give everyone a ziplock back that contains latex gloves, a sanitary wipe, and a large gauze pad. However, I usually keep a roll of paper towels and a package of Lysol wipes in my room.
You are correct; college classes never talk about that. When I student taught I did not see any of that. It was only when I worked with younger students did I see the picking of noses and runny noses. Ew! However, when I became a mother I got used to all of that. It didn't phase me anymore.
No, like when you were a student in pre k-12 did you just not pay attention to your surroundings?
Your prep-program did not fail you. There are many things in our jobs as teachers that can't be learned in the college program. No matter how much prep a program gives you, there will always be much more that is only learned from the actual experience of doing the job. Your school is required by law to show you videos preparing for blood borne pathogens among other situations, and then living the situation is the only way you will learn about it.
The law does not require us to watch a video on bloodborne pathogens, although it should. We are also not required to be first-aid or CPR certified, although the first year that I worked with troubled students, they sent me to CPI training. High school is better than elementary or preschool, but now we have NARCAN training for drug overdoses.
Give them tissues and put a trash can next to them.
When you were in school did you just not pay attention to what was going around you? How did you not know that would happen?
If you teach high school, my guess is that cleaning vomit off your shoe is not part of the job lol
Oh also your room is the place that spreads sickness through the whole school. Get a few gallons of the solution the janitors use to clean and soak brushes make the kids clean the tables, thoroughly wash anyplace there hands regularly touch, and hand out cheap diaper wipes to the whole classes. Sanitation is a job in itself!
Oh and also other art teachers being bullying aholes is one of the reasons I only taught for six years so ignore these other comments seriously!!!!
