You do not need a car. Parking is bad if you don’t have a spot. PT is just ok but will get you around. SF, despite the hills, is considered a walking city, depending on your neighborhood. A car is convenient for trips outside the city (Napa, Tahoe, etc) but you can rent or make friends with car owners.
Oh, and how can I forget the abundance of Lyft and UBER drivers. Hell, even cab drivers are nicer now since car share arrived.
As an Oakland resident we have one car in our household because we like getting out to explore on weekends. We don’t use it for commuting (being close to a BART station). Car break ins are common so you want a secure parking space if you do have a car. I don’t think you NEED one but if you already have it might as well keep it.
Almost everyone I know if SF owns a car and uses is rarely. Weekend trips, grocery runs, that sort of thing. But everyone uses public transit to get to work.
Thanks all!! I don't drive - at all. Ever. So the thought of having to get a car was scaring me. Especially with all the hills.
Good to know it's not a necessity
Nope. Many people I know do car shares or have a car they only use sparingly. It’s not Chicago or NY, but the pub trans system is okay and those of us who grew up riding buses and taking trains-we’re fine.
