Any word on layoffs at JPM?
So I've had 2 hiring managers and several recruiters from Amazon reach out to me about applying for some open positions with the company (android). I completed the coding assessment and now they want me to go through a round of 5 hour interviews next week. Is there a good chance I'll be hired if engineering managers are reaching out to me? I'm really not sure how badly I want to work for them and I don't want to be laid off months after being hired on. Anyone know what Amazon hiring is like?
I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

If you paid $54B for a company that loses $4M every day, you’d fire a ton of people too. Especially for a company that is objectively overstaffed. Foolish to view it any other way
It’s foolish to buy a company for 54B that loses 4m per day.
Originally, I thought it was cruel. But after seeing that the workers are covered until February, what I would expect will happen with the majority of these workers are that they will find another job and will have double income for a while.
Felt that it was generous to get coverage until Feb’23. Not fun to be in that situation but it helps with income without having to work for a few months.
Agreed

I don’t think he cares either way. He has rationalized that these are people who deserved to be laid off and I highly doubt that he has the same sense of empathy that most others would in a similar situation.
My bad, Bainie1 is the ill informed one
He don’t care and I don’t care.
What’s the narrative you’re trying to push here? Anyone that takes over a bloated, mismanaged company that burns $4M a day will do layoffs. Whether you act sad or not, the outcome is the same
I love this discussion, because the main reason why Elon Musk accelerated electric car and satellite development by decades, gave access to internet across the globe, etc., is because he was a contrarian and independent thinker, saw opportunities where others didn’t, and put all of his time and effort into being a builder and making the right decisions for these companies to be successful. It wasn’t because he cared for others or whether they thought he was being empathetic or not. And no one builds anything alone - all of “Elon’s people” don’t give a bleep about whether he shows empathy or not, it’s not why they work for him

It’s just business
I don’t think he cares. I’m not going to lie, it is of course really bad getting laid off and would not wish it upon anyone or myself, but I can’t say I am that concerned about it given Twitter employees have likely enjoyed a very comfortable life at a very comfortable comp and will likely be fine in the medium-long term. I think I would care more about one coal miner being laid off than all Twitter employees.
Coal miners can find jobs in the clean energy industry
He’s running a business, not a charity
OP you care to much about Elon.

Usually filthy rich people have no soul and will trample over any and everything to get what they want, that’s why they’re rich. Ruthlessness.
Op, it is business. Maybe as a CEO that’s how he thinks he can make money.
I don’t know the answer for that. We will all know how Twitter does.
Being rich doesn’t mean he needs to run Twitter like a charity. Business is business. Kpmg will also lay-off if they lose money on a regular basis like Twitter did

Anyone think he’s getting antsy? Basically scared away all the advertisers that would have otherwise been in the bag for 2023 all while paying double what it was worth, and now other advertisers are also hesitant.

What do you expect, dudes more of a lizard than any big tech CEO, just look at him laying batches and batches of his spawn
He isn’t the first executive nor the last to have laid off people to manage the business aligned with their business vision. I’m not sure why this is as much of a topic or a concern as it’s made out to be. Why is he expected to carry on with the business in the same way as before after buying it out
Let me put myself in his shoe. I just paid umpteen billion for this platform. Yeah, no, I don’t put a lot of weight on little peons opinions of my decisions because if they were valid they would have done it first. K THX BYEEE
You are a manager. Chill

I’m sad, and demand better social safety nets, for people who can’t pay their bills or afford childcare or healthcare, but I’m not sad for a bunch of software engineers who can walk across the street to get a new job.
Elon just wants Alexandria Ocasio Cortez to pay her $8. Nothing else matters.

I think he enjoys being center stage- and owning a high visibility social media platform feeds that need.
I’m genuinely surprised at the scale of the layoffs. I thought his pre acquisition statements were just his desire to be in headlines - didnt he also suggest converting the HQ into a homeless shelter?
I now believe he thinks twitter has an engineering problem.
I think layoffs are an unfortunate part of most business cycles particularly at companies deep in the red.
I think millennials and Gen Z getting a taste of humble pie so visibly is bad for individuals but probably good for larger society
They were to new to the workforce in 08 and it was their frost recession, but it wasn’t like what you will see now. Was deeper but primarily impacted only the entry level workers wasn’t the middle and executive ranks you see in typical layoff waves
And despite 08 they are by a long shot the best paid generation in history
