Happy Saturday everyone!! Looking to see if anyone can provide a referral or point me in the direction for job opportunities. Potentially in the tech space. I have years of experience in Marketing! Currently working in the tech/realestate industry as a Marketing Advisor. Microsoft Zillow Inc Paypal Amazon Deloitte Google Facebook (Meta) Dell
I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

I think as long as they're professional and keep it short, it shouldn't be an issue. Personally, I tend to default to saying that I felt my learning/growth was stagnant and that I am looking for something to stretch my skills. Better to say that than talk about my beef with senior leadership.

Yes that is smart!

I wouldn't in work or professional life ever bad talk an org or person upon first meetings. I don't want that to be my first impression. I've also put my foot in my mouth too many times when I didn't know the ties someone has to an org or person and that made it awkward for me bashing them. 🫣

Oh for sure me too. I think it’s like get older all learn, but it doesn’t seem to be happening.
I think a lot of people can only tolerate so much BS these days, and are no longer so afraid to speak out about it to a certain degree. 🤷🏽♀️
I was recently criticized for not “having a filter.” Yeah, that’s deliberate. At this point, I say what I think and don’t mind calling out the mind-numbing hypocrisy and abject idiocy.

I keep it professional but I don’t think it’s frowned upon anymore

I think you’re right, but I was really surprised. Some were slicker than others.
It’s a mite difficult for me personally to get around it when I have to answer the “why did you leave your last job” question on an application and your answer is “for personal reasons” (people tend to read between the lines and just. Know.) but I think as long as you aren’t just straight up trash talking then it’s fine. Bad workplaces exist pretty much everywhere.

Freelance they don’t know you didn’t get a severance so it would still work.
No i don't think it's true, especially new generations are much less diplomatic so is not surprising - considering they stream the calls in which they get fired etc.
But the way people handle this can tell you a lot about the person
I honestly never saw the purpose of a question like this because many things could have occurred for someone to find new work, and often it feels like pressure to say something surface so they are not flagged or passed over for a role.
I would actually do away with those types of questions (including job gaps) altogether. I would rather ask questions about work culture, communication processes, and etc., to understand how a candidate navigates those situations and learn what environments they are looking for in their new place of employment. Feels like less pressure, and no surface level answers.
Generally, yes. But I do feel as though the question "Why did you leave XX position?" has become more and more common and puts people in the odd position of having to walk a very tight line with how they answer.
Did you try applying for HOMELIGHT
Bowl Leader
I don’t know why I would want to apply for a home late since I am hiring. Maybe you could tell us more if it makes sense to do that.
As a rule I try not to. My last few roles it's been easy, I was genuinely heartbroken to move on but the money was too good not to. If asked the worst things about previous employers it's always "there weren't as many team building opportunities as I'd like".
It isn't appropriate to discuss the conflict between employees, managers, and owners.
Career advancement and stagnant skill development are appropriate.
I just got a new job, and I’m interviews I tried to not frame it as negative speak but more trying to figure out the way the other company ran. For instance, when ask in questions I would say “at my current employer, we do things XYZ way, can you tell me if that is the same process you do here?” Then it’s more up to the interviewer to determine if that was a ”negative” point. But I think people mostly want to make sure they aren’t walking into the same situation they are trying to get out of.
