If you make Partner, you need to leverage your network for your book of business. Do you think you can do this remotely? I’ve seen Partners live in a city they weren’t based out of but they traveled every week anyway.
I figured it would require frequent travel, given I’d be based in a different city. That doesn't scare me. I also thought it would put more pressure on developing good relationships above and below you. I was hoping to see if people thought that was possible. I know before COVID, there were a lot of face time requirements, and I couldn't imagine making partner on that path from a remote position. However, now that firms are sourcing talent from all over, my opinion has changed slightly.
What prompted this is that I'm seeing a lot of firms and people on FB discuss full remote positions, and I'm wondering what the end-game plan is.

I could see it being possible but extremely challenging. The partner role has evolved dramatically, it’s no longer enough to be able to inherit and manage a book of business. You have to prove that you can sell and win new work. If you’re able to do that locally while your team is remote from you then it could work out great.
Yeah. I thought it would be a long uphill battle. I’m a manager, so it’s harder to know how successful I would be at selling local work for a firm not in the area (we don’t have enough big clients for the big 4 to really play in the city, but I also don’t know how that would work with a MM/National firm).
I’ve wondered how hard it would be to be mentored by a partner/SM in one of the other offices and work to win business in the areas where the firm is located, but that’s also a big battle since it requires a reasonable amount of time on the ground in the city. Unfortunately, my personal situation prevents me from moving right now.
Probably not in the way you’re suggesting. You could probably be remote a lot of days, but you‘ll need to be in the office sometimes and you’ll need to travel to clients.
This is already happening. I work with multiple partners that now WFH 75% of the time. They are the most busy and benefit the most from the lack of commute time to fit in another 1-2 hours of meetings.
