Have you ever taken your total hours billed per year (we usually work more than we actually bill) and divided it by your annual salary + bonus? I did and it’s not as great as I thought.
Law firms are in the business of making money for the equity partnership. Fight to make equity or get out while young and able. Otherwise i believe it is a miserable way to live your life.
Yep. I took the job at an insurance defense firm because I was coming from a public defenders office and wanted to get some civil litigation experience. But... They offered me my same salary. To be fair- I live in a big city that pays public defenders well. Also, I am certainly getting the experience I asked for, which I feel will make me more marketable in the future. I didn’t want to be pigeon holed into public defense for life.
This is why I switched to a small firm with 4 attorneys. My hours at the office daily shrank, while my calculated hourly take home pay increased substantially. My salary almost doubled in just over a year. I thought all the perks that came with big- and medium-sized firms were worth it and meant that you “made it.” But honestly I’ve never been happier since I made the switch!
