I’ve been reaching out to some small shops that don’t have anyone in my position (yet). Got some promising responses that they’ll keep me in mind when they do. So let you know in maybe a year or two? 😂
Yes and yes. Most recruiters and CDs have a list of freelancers/talent they like/trust. Even if they intend to publicly post a job, they will probably reach out to these people first. If they don’t even know about you, they’re not going to think about you when they’re looking to hire.
Also pays off if you’re applying along with 200 other candidates. They see your name and at least it’ll be familiar so maybe they’ll consider you.
If you’re a freelancer like me or trying to find a new job you should be reaching out to everyone (if same recruiter only every 1-2 months). The thing is most networking is cold contacting so you’re only going to get 2-5% responding. This means you have to get the volume of up.
Worse thing that can happen is you won’t get a response or get a “sorry we’re not hiring.”
I research agencies/shops on LinkedIn, find their recruiters, CDs and or operations people, and connect with them. If I can figure out their email, I send an intro email, otherwise I send DM. Keep it short, nice and simple...like 4-6 short sentences. All the important info up front like availability & experience, genuine compliment on work or agency in the middle, thank them and end with website.
*If I have an actual connection there like a former coworker or something, I’ll ask them to forward my info.
Every recruiter’s contact info goes in a spreadsheet where I keep track of if they responded, if interviewed & when I reached out ofc.
It’s a crapshoot, but it does work sometimes. Plenty of agencies, especially small ones have gaps they want to fill but don’t have the time nor the patience to filter through applicants through a formal job posting. They’d rather take their time and find the perfect person through their own research as long as it’s not an urgent need.
