Generally, a tax LLM is a waste of time and money unless it’s from a top program. Even then, the value is still pretty dubious for most people. Most tax lawyers don’t have one and don’t need one. I guess there are a few narrow exceptions. Like it can make sense if you’re retooling into tax from a non-tax background or want to get into a very technical tax niche. Outside of that, i’d say the main reason to do one is if you’re gunning for partner and want to stack every possible credential in your favor (again, still not necessary but could help on the margins). If you’re going to do it, the only programs I’d seriously consider are NYU and Gtown. They may have online or hybrid options, so check those out. Wouldn’t recommend getting one from anywhere outside of those two.
GULC has an online tax LLM, I’m enrolled now (I live several states away from DC). I attend part time, still working 100%. It’s a heavy lift. I work in employee benefits and GULC has an EB certificate within the Tax LLM program. It’s not uncommon to see EB practitioners than have matriculated through the GULC Tax LLM with the EB certificate. The online program is the exact same as in-person. You stream the same classes and attend with in-person students. Your degree upon graduation doesn’t denote that you attended online.
LLMs are generally a waste of money, except Tax LLMs. But, even then, an online one is about as useless as one that's not in Tax. Save your money. Your career will not improve with an online Tax LLM. If you're going to get one, it needs to be a top program.
I think GULC and NYU have an online one.
