Yes. I started in the govt as a GS 7, worked my way up to GS 14, and am now a D Manager almost at 2 years. The benefits are different, but not necessarily better. It depends on what’s important to you at various phases of life. Ask me anything
These are such good considerations. Thank you!
Yes, the salary will pull you in, but wait until you calculate your hourly rate with all the extras you’re required to do. You’re practically working for minimum wage! GS has more job security and way better work-life balance!

GS benefits are better than D. Our retirement isn’t anything to write home about. #daylightrobbery
OP, I think I know why. It’s the pay. The GS pay scale is open to all, everyone know what everyone makes. It’s not great, it’s not bad, but you also don’t get the benefits that your active duty counterparts will get. You will have authority though, and minimal stress with job security for the rest of your life.
But all in all, it’s the pay. It’s gotta be.
The last GS-15 I worked with and built a great relationship was ex-KPMG, with a top 10 MBA. Always wondered why he decided to go the GS route after Big 4. He said he wanted the stability as you won’t ever be out of a job. Sometimes that is worth more to some than climbing the ladder with uncertainty. For me, I’m the latter (no pun intended).
I was GS and leaving GPS to go back for a 60% raise.
I didn't negotiate, I was qualified for the job at that pay.
Was GS and Now Deloitte. I came in thinking it was greener on this side of the fence. It is not. I think the benefits are roughly the same. Government has Pension, and TSP with better matching. Now offers government leave. You get both sick and regular leave and ALL government holidays. #RegretIt
Wow, thanks for this perspective. Were you career/can you come back to GS? Or is it no longer appealing because of a higher salary at Deloitte?
Gs = less stress. What else do you want to know?
That’s definitely appealing. I’m curious about benefits like vacation, parental leave, healthcare plan, etc. I don’t have experience in government but it seems like people tend to leave gov for consulting more than they leave consulting for gov. I can’t figure out why.
Healthcare and retirement are better as a govie. Leave is about the same at the lower to mid levels. Maternity leave and other programs are way better at Deloitte. And of course, so is pay. But you can't beat the job security with the government
Fwiw, govvie just got good family leave 1 oct
