Working in biotech helps progress the medical world. Working in pharma advertising helps fill pharma companies pockets.
Rising Star
I said pharmaceutical advertising, not pharma companies, which is what OP was asking about. Doctors should be informing patients of medical treatment options, not ads of people running down the beach while a list of legal disclaimers plays.
How would HCP's learn about new medications were it not for advertising?
What do reps carry?
Both. But as with any industry, $ale$ are the main reason why any company does anything… and you can’t do that w/o advertising and marketing. Progressing the medical field is only the byproduct of trying to make money.
It’s a bit unique to North America since every other developed country has some form of universal healthcare so the spend is more spread between healthcare systems and HCPs since the country is negotiating pricing/coverage directly w the drug company. There’s still physician advertising in other countries but it’s a much smaller business. But in US it’s another part of a bloated system full of middlemen.
It absolutely helps humanity and the people that you love. It lets you and your family have information about a drug for your condition. Without that, you would have to wait for your next appointment with your doctor, and hope that she or he even knows about a new treatment for what you have and wants to try it. Information is power and control when you have a disease. People walk into their doctors and they ask about something they heard about through an advertisement and the doctor says, that’s interesting. Let me look into it. Do you wanna try it? You also need to remember that unfortunately some doctors are told by their practices and hospitals to stay with one manufacturers drug because of a financial deal so you know, knowing about alternatives gives you control . It saves lives.
The US (and NZ) are the only two countries where pharma companies can advertise to consumers. It’s all about money.
Do you think advertising to consumers is a good thing though. It makes them more educated in their choice of pharmaceuticals instead of relying on just the doctor who may have an in with a drug rep or a reason they’re pushing a drug.
