I’ll add that getting there is only one part of the equation. UX, engagement and conversions have to be considered.
Some agencies prioritize pretty design over SEO. It's a battle to educate that you can achieve both with preplanning. SEO isn't something you sprinkle on after a page is "finished."
They will not freak out. Good search rankings don't matter if your website is full of unecessary copy for SEO purposes and people bounce because they can't find what they need (just an example). Like everything in life, there's a balance. It's their job to consider all inputs and deliver a compelling end product.
If no one actually finds your site, then what good is all that creative work. Yes, balance indeed. SEO is not just a bunch of “unnecessary copy."
Its a balance. Its not that they don't care. They are responsible for the aesthetic experience of the site as well as (hopefully) making sure its mobile friendly. Its a partnership and you need to foster that relationship. In order to save your content, you need a content and SEO strategy. All stakeholders need to buy into that. If they don't, then I recommend sharing with them why its important, the possible repercussions, monitor & report.
