Earlier in my career, I said yes to almost every request because I wanted to be seen as helpful and committed. Over time, that led to being stretched too thin. I’m now learning to set better boundaries. How do you decide when to say no without hurting your reputation?

I learned the hard way that if you don’t set boundaries early on, you’ll end up being the person who gets walked all over. I have no problem taking on extra tasks to help the team—but at what cost? I always evaluate what it’s going to cost me before I agree to additional work.

It’s often just a matter of being too busy to take on more. If I have time, I’ll offer help but people are generally understanding that you don’t always have the bandwidth to do more
