My son wants to study the same as me, he is only 12 years old, but he has an immense love for biology. In spite of how flattered I feel I can't stop thinking how difficult it is to find a stable job in this profession, is it time to talk about it, or do I wait for a little longer?

It's definitely a great feeling to see your son so passionate about the same subject that I'm studying! While it's true that biology is an incredibly interesting field, it can be difficult to find a stable career in this profession. As much as I know you'd love to encourage him to pursue his interests, it's important for him to understand the realities of this profession and have a realistic outlook of what he can achieve by studying it.

I think at this age, it's best to let him explore his interests without worrying too much about the practical aspects. With guidance and mentorship from yourself and others, he'll eventually figure out what he wants to do with his studies in the long run.

It is sweet that your son has an immense love for biology and it is understandable why you would feel flattered. However, it is important to have an honest discussion with him about the current job market in this field. It can be difficult to find stable employment in many science-related fields, so it is important to make sure he understands what he will be up against.

There are still opportunities available and a lot of ways to make a career out of biology, such as research experience or working in a lab. Make sure he understands that there are many roads he can take, this way he will do his proper research.

If you don't want him to go into biology, there are many career alternatives he can explore within the same field if he finds it too difficult to find a job directly related with his degree. No matter what he chooses, having such an interest at such a young age is something you should be proud of!

I have a friend who graduated with a CS degree in '17. Since then he's sporadically looked for work in the field but not found any, and has worked as a supervisor. His coding skills have atrophied substantially.

I've been encouraging him to grind leetcode and apply for at least 10 jobs a day, I'm not sure how much hes really doing.

Is there any chance of him finding work? Would taking a bootcamp help him? At this point I'm considering advising him to move on.

Successfully just completely an internal transition into product management coming from mechanical engineering. From thought of a pivot, to reaching out to PMs, gathering the experience to make the switch, and receiving an offer, it took me ~10 months.
