First-gen grad students, does your family put pressure on you to succeed? It feels like our relationship is them just bugging me about my work. I’d love some advice, I miss my fam.

My family used to pressure me to do excellent, now they pressure me to share with them, and to be honest, I want to share with them but I hardly ever have time anymore.

That means you have a family that wants the best for you, you're lucky. Take care of them and when you can do what you want, spend quality time with them.

My family was super understanding, but I have a friend who wasn't so lucky. His parents put their entire futures on his shoulders and reminded him every chance they got. He ended up cutting ties with them and taking a semester off because his mental health got so bad. Thankfully, they backed off a little after that. I'm sorry your family is putting your though that, I wish I had advice to offer.

How do you encourage a team culture where sr engineers are not allowed to be rude when people ask questions? Especially when they assume people haven’t done due diligence, or that something is obvious in the code, and make them look bad.

I’ve been an IT recruiter for big tech, startups & agencies for 15 yrs now and I have never ever come across an ATS that discards candidates based on “lack of keywords” in their resumes … I’m hearing this way too often at the mo & something’s not adding up…

Does anyone here work with an ATS that does this?

Also I’m not talking about knockout Qs you ask (like salary expectations) Im talking about the software automatically scanning & discarding applications before you even get to review them.

I have been approached by 3 separate HR people at a startup company to interview for a position. I already have a fulltime job that pays well and I only started 6 months ago too. Anyways, the pay was intriguing and the job was a high level scientific advisor so I did interviews. At the last interview, at the end I was told the job was for management but I prepared for a different kind of interview. I am waiting for an offer or rejection letter. I feel peeved that they wasted my time. Red flags?

Need help settling a debate with my friend. She thinks I will have an easier time getting research grants because I'm male. I think it's the opposite because companies are trying to change the status quo and get more women involved (which I'm not complaining about... please don't attack me.) Which one of us is more right than the other? I'm interested in getting as many viewpoints as possible, whether or not they agree with me or with her. Thanks!!!
