Congratulations on completing a bootcamp! I have a similar issue but I’m working towards it. Building a portfolio is a great first step in getting a professional role in UX. Here are a few tips for getting your first professional role:
Network, Network, Network: Attend industry events and connect with other professionals in the field. They may be able to provide valuable insights and connections.
Showcase your skills: Create a portfolio that highlights your best work and demonstrates your understanding of user-centered design principles.
Be open to different roles: Don't limit yourself to specific job titles or industries. Be open to different types of roles and opportunities.
Keep learning: Stay up-to-date with industry trends and continue to improve your skills through online courses, workshops, and other learning opportunities.
Reach out to companies and recruiters: Don't be afraid to reach out to companies and recruiters directly and express your interest in working with them.
Remember to be patient and persistent, and don't get discouraged. Keep working on your portfolio and networking and eventually you will land that first professional role in UX.😊
When you’re done with your portfolio, apply to internships. A few companies don’t have the “must be enrolled requirement”.
Also, to get some experience in product teams consider accepting unpaid opportunities on Angelist now Wellfound asap.
I’ll say my first role was a bit of an anomaly because it was a new grad role at an agency. But my first portfolio was trash. It was on notion because I didn’t have the funds to host it anywhere else. And it had 2-3 projects most of which were from designathons. But the one case study I used for the technical was fleshed out with almost all parts of the design process (minus usability testing because we ran out of time during the designation). The important part is to add visuals to highlight your point. Don’t make it all text. Because recruiters don’t always have time to read. So if you make it visually and content wise interesting, you’ll have good shot. Good luck!
