Every time I try to teach self-portraits, I have tears. I am trying to remind them to be kind to themselves, that the goal is to always be improving and never perfection. I draw simply for them in any demonstrations I do. But inevitable, someone is crying. 3rd-6th grade, mostly. Anyone else?

This is very resource dependent, but I have a side show of self portraits I've made over the years, starting with some personal elementary art work to show students that art is not magic it's practice.

Nope same here! I do more traditional portraits 1st-3rd and with the older ones I find a cool gimmick is great especially if draws the focus away from the portrait itself. In the past I've had them do cartoon style, foreshortened, Calder inspired wire portraits (with limited success), text based, and crazy colored blended oil pastels. Also with middle school I had students pick a famous person and we printed images and that took off some pressure.

I have given both my 4th and 5th grade classes two assignments, talking about symmetry the first was sugar skulls the latter is portraits.

(This could be done on with a theme showing important faces in history Theme for Hispanic Heritage, Black History, Women's History, M.L.K. Day , and so many more)
*For portraits I only give them one half of the face, dividing it right down the bridge of the nose, lips, and chin.
*I copy each one to a paper and save the originals (Printing in black and white or full color is your choice.) I prefer the kids have a chance to practice their value scales with shading in GRAY SCALE.

*Student recreate the other half of the face in the mirror image of the other half.

*If they are having trouble seeing if it is right or wrong have them spin their paper up-side-down and look at it from another viewpoint. then fix their lines.

Till you get it RIGHT.

I usually stay away from realism when it comes to younger grades because that skill is often hard to attain at their age. I focus on a time period like Cubism, Surrealism etc. to show them that portraits don't have to look real to feel real.

I use self portraits as a base point assessment. On the first day in class, I give a simple prompt such as draw a picture of yourself doing something that makes you happy. I remind each student that there is no right way and to do it as they feel comfortable. Then, at the end of the year I give them the same prompt, but with one difference. I tell them to do it in a style similar to something learned that year. Then I bring out their pictures from the beginning of the year and we do a comparison. This usually brings out a lot of smiles because everyone’s second portrait is always more successful than the first.

You can always show some of the crazy portraits famous artists have done just to show it doesn’t have to be perfectly realistic. I think building up growth mindset over the years is key so they can learn not to be so harsh on themselves. You can sit with them and ask them what they don’t like about their art. Sometimes I will draw over the line that they had erased to show that in fact it was perfect and then “air draw” where to go from there. Maybe you can help them come up with some creative ideas to fix and area they don’t like. What if they drew their pet or a book in front of the lips that they messed up? Or sunglasses over the eyes? Or a hat on the hair.

I have 2 or 3 criers every year it happens. I just pull them to the side and talk it through. Try portraits from comic books, they know exactly what they look like because they see it every day but a comic is a but more subjective and still teaches facial anatomy. Just please for the love of God don't let them do anime
