You are not on a partner track until you’re actually up for partner. As a manager, you have a long way to go.
Difference is pretty much the same as it is in all the other B4 - equity vs non-equity role, generally broader vs more focused responsibilities, generally higher sales and revenue managed goals with comp to match all of that.
MD here. Comp is a black box, and no one shares info, but my general sense is that there is significant variation (though a tighter band than principal / partner level). I think it helps (comp wise) to lateral in from another professional services firm.
Partner track? Are you skipping SM track?

If you are more of a technical expert, have a narrow yet deep skill set - you will be an ED candidate. Even so, some broader skill sets will be EDs as well, based on the business case. Both great career paths with different pros/cons. I would talk to partners you trust about this. They likely already see you as one or the other.
