How do you deal with interviewing with someone who was your old boss. With the old boss I had some problems with my performance the first year, but turned it around and worked there another 5 years. I just don’t know if the old boss will mention this to my interviewer ( they are friends). Do I admit I made mistakes and talk about how I improved from them?

What can be revealed during a reference check? Are they different from background checks? I was laid off without cause during my probationary period. I've now got a written offer in Tech contingent on reference checks.
