Feeling incredibly lonely to be the last standing person in my class. How do you deal with this feeling of emptiness while picking up all the workload of those who left 😭

I can relate. For various reasons, the two associates I’m closest to in my class are out right now, and it’s had a surprisingly big impact on my mental health. It’s nice to destress with people who know the firm and know the players. I know the two associates will be back, but it did make me think about prioritizing finding a good therapist.

Yes that’s my plan assuming they can actually find laterals to fill the void

You're mis-framing the question. You have to decide (1) if you like your job enough to keep it, and (2) how to optimize your satisfaction with your job and prospects. That's kind of it.

It sucks not to have anyone you can turn to as a peer. If you had a best friend at work, maybe lateral to join them if that would satisfy you most?

But a job is just a means to goals of your choosing, so work the problem.

like

Well I need the money, and really the only thing that made it tolerable was to have close friends in the workplace, considering the ungodly hours we spend on this job. They all went in house and it’s not like we can just go as a batch. So I guess to your point, I just suck it up until I can exit.

Either buckle up and push for partner or stop swimming upstream and Lateral out

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

My work product is becoming worse and partners are noticing/commenting. I just hate the practice area so much that every time I am asked to do something I just get it done as quickly as possible and can’t be bothered to put in effort. I think I need to quit so I’m not fired for bad performance with a horrible reputation. Am I nuts and should I just wait til they let me go?

When should a stub start getting worried about not having much work and low billable hours?
I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.
