Grow a beard?
Funnily, I already have a beard and look older than I actually am 🙃
Differentiate yourself from a sole contributor into a group or practice level contributor. What is your influence outside of just yourself. How will you increase revenues, margins, and decrease firm risk.
Don’t. Come in as a Manager and start at the top of the pack. Learn. Differentiate yourself. Build trust with those who go to market with you. Then accelerate through Director with no slow down learning those roles. Lower your risk to long term success and the relationships you will grow.
At this point, I think it’s too late for that. I would probably seek guidance on what you would need to eventually promote to that director position. If it’s reasonable, and you feel like you will be able to advance within a fair time horizon, I would say take the manager position… assuming the comp is fair and it’s not going to look weird on your résumé (i.e., if you’re a senior manager now and it’s gonna look like a downgrade).
All that all being said, I would investigate whether this is a bait/switch situation. Sometimes companies oversell a job to achieve a stronger pool of candidates for a lesser position.
Appreciate the thoughts. It isn’t a bait-and-switch per my insider intel. Manager role would be a 25% comp decrease plus a title downgrade (so out of the question). Really hoping to wow in the final round for Director.
Managers say things like “I completed the project on time.”
Directors say things like “I achieved 15% savings in 8 months”.
Use metrics and talk like a business operator, not just a manager.
Good luck, you got this.
Sounds like a scope issue. Your resume shows you have the low level tasts/skills handled, but maybe not broader responsibilities, like budget or team size.
