Know your billing rate and total hours you billed, thats your tangible value to the company.
If other peers have higher total comp relative to your cost of living market, and you know that and what it is, it’s reasonable to request that. That said it should be worthwhile as a % to do this and don’t mention who you got the reference from.
Ultimately you have to be willing to walk. If you have a compensation number that you believe you should be at and that you could make elsewhere, and they won’t match that, then you should be willing to leave over that.
Also it’s not uncommon for your partner to not have a holistic view, the numbers and increases are systemic based on rating, and they’re generally just the messenger.

EY historically has paid under market but if you are a strong performer they will get you to market rates and above because losing top talent with high sales and revenue is painful. Both PPED’s and senior managers know how slow and painful hiring is which results in also losing talent.
EYP does a much better job of this and tends to have stronger talent in many areas, but if you are outside that practice, and you are a known high performer, I know I always went to bat for those members of my practice.
Why can’t you go in with an open mind and just be honest about how you feel? See how the conversation goes and ultimately decide for yourself if money is the resin for your happiness at the firm or is it the total package of experience people etc. Raises are shirt term gains in overall job satisfaction as they tend to smooth out over the years and staying at the firm will provide you long term gains if this is ultimately what you enjoy doing.
If you have better opportunity, then just leave
What if I wanna stay (mainly because I can’t)?
The comparison should be salary not change.
First, I would ask where you are in the band for your level. Leadership has communicated they will provide that this year; at least what quartile you are in. If you’re in the 1st or 2nd, you should definitely ask why, especially if your year end rating was sig above. If you’re in 3rd or 4th, your partner probably isn’t going to feel too bad for you.
At the end of the day, the easiest way to get the quickest, short term bump is to leave. Going up from there has its challenges as you’ll likely then definitely be at the top of the pay band wherever you go and you have to regrow your network. Definitely not impossible, just additional challenge.
I was under the impression that all of this was (raises, comp cohorts, pbb ranges) standardized and communicated in June for EYP, so I’m generally surprised that there are surprises at this point. Exception being some of the various SD cohorts which harmonization is still somewhat out of whack.
Op, What’s your frame of reference? Where have you seen “full transparency” on how salaries are calculated?
Good luck!
Are you sure that others got more than you? Is it because they were making lower and have been adjusted. There are number of parameters that decide the raise and not only your rating. Go with open mind. Listen to your partner on rationale and their feedback and understand the band/range. If still unhappy, be straightforward and mention that you deserve more and cover the reasons for same.
VP1 can you explain more about what you mean about my perceived reality vs expectations? Honestly I expected to get a higher amount given my performance
Are you sure you were not already in upper level in salary band?
If you are some 15k below someone of same level and about comparable experience , I would try to negotiate with a counter offer in hand
