I spent 14 years agency side before moving brand side. I’ve been brand side the last 8 years. While I enjoyed my agency time in my 20s and early 30s, I really appreciate the flexibility and balance I have now. Agency life is a grind. I still have friends in agency and they work nights and weekends on pitches and stuff. I can’t imagine doing that now. I don’t love work enough to sacrifice that.
For sure, I get that question a lot. There’s a lot of agency folks trying to make the transition. I kind of lucked out because my first client side job was for the advertising team for an insurance company. My team was made up of all ex agency people and they were specifically looking for someone with agency experience to manage the agency and creative process.
Unfortunately there aren’t a ton of those jobs on the marketing side…usually more senior level clients get involved in the ATL creative work when working with agencies. However depending on the brand you will have tons of folks working in things like paid media, performance marketing, CRM, web, SEO, etc. I essentially work in CRM for my company leveraging owned channels to drive customer engagement and product use. I would maybe look into those types of specialties to see if there’s something you might enjoy based on your skill set.
While I think agency folks are perceived well, it can be difficult to land a marketing role without specific marketing experience. Ultimately you’ll have a much better shot if your experience lines up with exactly what they’re looking to hire.
Everyone I know (myself included) is desperately trying to go brand side.

Depends on the company, but the “permanence” (comparatively speaking) of brand side where you’re actually dedicated to longer term projects should reduce the chaos. I’d look toward larger companies who are less likely to be scrambling for insane growth targets to meet some Patagonia vest clad PE/VC type’s oversized expectations - you’ll instead face having your budget cut before the end of Q1 (and therefore having to squeeze every penny of work out of your agency under threat of canceling the MSA). The third group will be a mid-size privately held B2B org who will view marketing as a luxury and refuse to invest in it in the first place - but that might give you space to have a massive impact by bringing the ability to actually write a strategic marketing plan with a positioning statement and long term vision.
It’s a crapshoot, but I’ll take it over agency any day of the week.
Early on, first starting out, I actually really like the variety and chaos of the agency. It was a lot to handle, but glad I started out that way. Now though, hearing the perks of being brand side, it’s something that I am working towards heavily. I don’t doubt that it doesn’t come with its own quirks though.
Comes down to personal preference, the level of your role, and we have to consider that each company is different. But for me, brand side is too slow, the people less able and inclined to affect change, and the bureaucracy of change too painful. Being an outside consultant allows me a lot more flexibility in what I work on, how I work, who I work with, and what effect I can have on the client (and agency) business.
