we’re only doing advertising here, people. it’s not that big of a deal. we can enjoy the work but not think that it’s more important than our lives.
on our death beds, we’re not going to wish we wrote 10 more lines or kerned that type better.
I don’t find these to be mutually exclusive especially as a strategist. It’s entirely possible to have a huge impact and do great work without working a zillion hours in our role since we don’t really make anything.
I cut back - way back - on hours two years ago just by spending less time in meetings I didn’t need to be in and really focusing on what matters (the thinking) and none on what doesn’t (packaging the thinking in beautiful slides as though they were the creative output).
That gave me more time to spend with the clients - which I spend understanding/shaping their needs and softening the ground for creative. Which makes everyone’s lives better.
Working at a sweatshop is a young persons game. Totally worth it when you’re starting out. But not as valuable later on when you need to be effective and efficient, not just effective
Replace the word freedom with your job title and I agree
"Caring about the work" in 2018 is just asking to have your heart broken.
You’re right CD1. You spend all weekend worrying about what line is gonna help that toilet paper company sell more rolls. I’ll be with my family.
You guys are both right. How is that not obvious?
Honestly I was talking more about picking a job than once you’re there. Like, I’d rather get paid more and work less and work at Grey or McCann or something than get paid less and work more to have Droga or WK on my resume
CD1 - what product would you replace toilet paper with in order to make it worth sacrificing time with your family/your life?
We try to sell sh*t to people that don’t necessarily need that sh*t, and are probably better off not buying the sh*t. AMEN OP
CD1 I’m good at my job. I just prioritize my life over trying to win dumb awards or get industry validation. It’s cool if you don’t.
If you don’t do good work you’ll have the freedom of no job
When you do good work, you don’t have to work on toilet paper. Must be nice to have zero accountability
OP I guarantee creatives are trying to do good work at those agencies, too. You aren’t helping
My dumb awards got me a green card. That meant I could live the life I want, where I want. But hey. That’s just me.
Oh ya! It’s heating up everyone - Happy Caturday! 😂😽
The only work thing I care about is the work; it’s why I come to work. It’s a shame that so much of what’s on here is people who work in different areas shitting on each other, but happily, it’s never been like that for me at work. This could be because literally every single person I’ve ever worked with knows how much I care about the work. There is of course a very long list of things I do not care about at work and workshops are at the top of that list. But that’s a different post.
What CD1 said. Totally and utterly.
Love it or leave it, please.
@SVP no I get it, I meant the argument seemed to be between you--a Group Planning Director who lives and dies by "the work"--and the OP--a Strategy Director who was all about his or her family. I thought it was interesting that it was Strategy Heads who were getting into it with each other over "the work" and not creatives.
Because--no offense--I (as a GCD type) see Strategists more as Back of the House people, not taking a lot of credit either way for "the work" itself. Creatives are typically more invested--and typically bigger assholes.
Spot on, BBDO 1. But for me at least - I love the work and think it’s worth it, and think it’s stating the obvious to say there’s other stuff that matters too. Of course there is. My only thing was that work wise, the work is it :) PS I used to work at BBDO- a place that cares not one bit about strategy, but where i felt valued thanks to the amazing creatives I worked with.
