Sort of. I’ve been in “warranty” role that was basically mean dealing with anything and everything having to do with a product from random bugs in stack or AWS to answering miscellaneous questions from the client on potential improvements, how something works, etc.
Yes, currently that is the case. I’m enjoying the down time and building the relationship with my manager
This is an ideal type of role that sets you up well for manager - think of it as a mini COO or chief of staff. Better question would be what are you doing to take advantage of this opportunity?
First, elevate yourself from thinking of that as cleanup hitter or menial to thinking of you as the fixer and solver. You are the critical ones person that makes things happen.
Make a list of the priority types of areas that you “handle,” and manage up by regularly referring to it with your manager / partner so that you not only get credit for each thing that gets checked off that list, but can show how you’re thinking bigger picture on the ranking / ordering that list. Go in with recommendations of things to add to it, move up / down and your “why” — seek advice and feedback. If you see other new things to do, add them. What kinds of things around you do you want to be doing? You basically over time will have complete control of what you are doing if you do it right. And if you think your current tasks are meaningless, I would challenge you to elevate those for yourself and figure out how to make them important to you so that you can make them (and therefore you) more important to others. Do such a good job that your manager is hardly needed. See if you can stay one step ahead of your manager before they even assign you things. Then take it to the next frontier, see if you can help your peers do the same technique. Do all that, and now you’re suddenly the manager yourself and you’ve trained yourself on how to run a team by managing your own list / scope and helping others do the same. Helpful?
If you work for a reputable firm then meh, maybe worth it. If you do a crappy role for a crappy joint, run!
