Has anyone ever just blasted a company in their resignation letter? The company I work for is highly toxic and I am having a really hard time keeping my mouth shut. Since I haven't found another job yet.

This is short-sighted. You don’t want to unnecessarily burn bridges; you don’t know when people you offend may be useful to you in the future (or speak poorly of you to someone who is). If you think it will make a difference, I think it is appropriate to civilly tell leadership/HR/etc… why you are leaving. Being civil will be more impactful, because people tend to be more willing to make changes when the criticism seems reasonable and constructive and not just heated and vindictive. Keep the more spicy complaints between your friends and family. They’re also much more likely to sympathize with that emotion than a company that will just write you off as a disgruntled employee.

Wow!!! With my time approaching to give my notice, I needed to read this. I have my notice sitting in my drafts. After reading this I’ll make edits. Thank you!

like

I agree you need to tell someone so you can get it off your chest but that someone isn't someone from the company. I would see if your company offers EAP. Talk to a coach or a therapist. If not, just talk to a friend or a family member.
Feel free to leave them a negative review or blast them on Glassdoor and/or Fishbowl anonymously too.

How’s the saying go? It will fall on deaf ears or whatever.

Glassdoor

like

It won’t change anything, it won’t bring you peace, and it could only endanger future opportunities.

Speak your truth through your actions, by leaving.

like

It might feel good in the moment, but I would resist the urge. Nobody is going to take your feedback and say that changes need to be made. Instead, you will make unnecessary enemies. Best advice is to accept that it’s not a great company, thank them for the opportunity to work there and move on with your life.

Perfect example of something that needs to be said but doesn’t need to be heard. The euphoria from your admonition will be shout lived. Its potential adverse reverberations to your career however may be infinite. A company is people and people move. Even to companies you may consider working for in future.

like

I did. I was burning bridges anyway by leaving so the point was to keep the layers of leadership above me on the same page and make any of my remaining exit conversations less time-consuming and annoying.

I wanted to SO bad in my last job but I forced myself to keep it professional. I got the silent treatment after I put in my notice but I feel better knowing that I stayed professional and they acted like big babies

Write your thoughts down and don’t send it out. I know someone who got threatened with a lawsuit for blasting a company

Can you save your feedback for the exit interview?

I don't understand why it's do hard to find a job when they say there is an accountant shortage? It's so depressing going into my jib feeling stuck accepting being treated so badly😢 a colleague is now the next victim. She said she is going to quit because she has too much self respect for herself! I said, "and I don't?" People tell me why are you still working there? Because I am too unworthy of another job? It's demoralizing

like

Don’t do it, if you’re angry find time to workout to blow off steam. Go for a run, do a boxing class, lift some heavy weight - healthier outlets for frustration that won’t ruin your future opportunities!

like

I did for a teller job at Wells Fargo back in the day. I quit the same day, but yeah will fall on deaf ears. Nothing is likely to change.

like

Agreed. It would just make me feel better.

Find someone you trust to talk to about what you are experiencing. A mentor or career coach would be ideal. Use all of your energy toward building something positive or learning something new.

You can also add a review on Glassdoor. I have read some really outrageous reviews about a company that I worked for. I would never recommend writing anything really negative in a resignation letter. Companies that experience a high turnover rate don’t care about their employees. Unfortunately, I believe that this could happen in many situations with the high unemployment rate.

like

Be nice to people on the way up because you never know who you will meet on the way down

Always be professional

Beware what you put in writing! Just keep it simple. The less you say the better. The Tax Director is right. It won't change anything. Make sure you get written references. And it helps me to ask myself - what did I gain from this situation? How did I grow? And sell the heck out of that.

The Jerry McGuire method may not work all the time.

Agreed. But it would make me feel better.
