Has anyone here considered switching into the mental health field? Considering becoming a therapist because I feel it would be much more rewarding, but I’m hung up on the lower salary (which I know sounds awful). Thoughts?

My mom was a therapist and while it is rewarding, it is also incredibly stressful to listen to other people’s problems all day. Most therapists I’ve met need therapists of their own to keep them stable. There’s nothing wrong with wanting a salary that you can live off comfortably either.

My wife is a psychologist. And has the loans to prove it. A nice house’s worth. Fortunately, she’s great at it. And enjoys every day. But she will be paying these loans off for the rest of her life. So, if you’re going to get your doctorate, ya better be sure.

Burnout is rough if you don’t regularly cleanse your spirit. Being around people all day who have severe issues takes a toll on your body and mind. You’ll have to be deliberate and aggressive about your energetic boundaries with patients. But it can be very rewarding. My mother loved being a therapist. She really felt she was making a difference. If you do go into that work be cognizant of how you want to approach treatment. Going into private practice is great if you can do it. You can get better money and offer patients more long term care. You probably need higher credentials but it’s worth it in the end I’ve been told. A lot of providers just want to get patients out the door and a lot of people have severe issues that can only be treated with long term care. In private practice you can offer that but if you work for a provider only, you won’t get much of that. But good luck! Trust your gut!

Really investigate it carefully. Helping people with severe problems over a long period of time takes a certain kind of patience & philosophy. It order to be successful long term, it’s essential to understand this going in & before you make the big commitment to the training/education required. I’ve counseled practitioners in the field & some of them made the decision over time to focus on patients/clients that they thought were deeply committed to getting better & getting to a positive outcome.

The burnout rare in mental health field makes the ad industry seem very healthy and stable by comparison.

uplifting

I worked in the mental health field prior to making the career switch. Worked in rehabs and treatment centers. Watched after clients and eventually marketed for them for 3 years before going to ad school. In my experience, that niche of the field is incredibly grimy and predatory. So much so, I was more than willing to talk to lawyers to help out patients’ families who’d been wronged. But that’s just my experience. I only mention this as a warning if you’re approached with that opportunity. To be honest, the people I trusted more than anyone were therapists. I say go for it but just be aware the ones above you might not have as pure intentions as you.

EY High Deductible Health Plan vs Open Access Select (don’t have EY bowl access yet) I just started at the firm and am trying to pick my healthcare. My question is, what does it mean that it’s not a “national network (Is this a national network?: No)” but it’s “network coverage: see any licensed doctor”? Those seem to contradict. Also HSA vs FSA, as a healthy 26yo, which is right for me (High D only has HSA)

A lot of senior leaders in my team have 1 so I’m really not sure at this point. The opportunity costs are high, but I’m well aware of the long term benefits. I’ve also already taken the GMAT and gotten a 740. I’m an Asian male and find the hurdles that we go through for admissions a turn off as well.
