Go brand side. Switch every 3-5 years. You make loads more money, way more perks and benefits, bonuses, slower work pace, more work life balance... a plus if you go to a tech brand.
@FCB Health 1 - Networking is key and referral links make a difference. Dont get discouraged and consider applying to roles that might not be 100% what you want to do but get you a foot in the door. Much easier to pivot internally
Brand side is far superior. I'll never go back to an ad agency. I don't know how they continue to attract a retain people. They grind their employees to the bone.
Same here. The grass is indeed greener brand side and I’ll never look back
I think I’m in a similar boat. I know most industries I pivot to won’t be as fun, but at this point idc I just want to get paid.
Best way to get a raise and promotion is to switch companies every 3-5 years.
You must’ve been an FCB employee
You've got some great advice here I would only add become a master of AI. It makes you more attractive to potential employers brand side.

I went in house and it’s way better
I’m part of the Self-Employment Assistance Program (SEAP) as part of NY Dept of Labor’s unemployment insurance. So yeah, still get my checks but for taking coaching and classes to build an LLC. Love my city!!
My state has this too. I went this route last time I was laid off from agency life. It was fun to start a biz but ultimately I had to come back agency side to support myself. Tariffs killed my biz and poor consumer confidence.
Shore up your network. Get in touch with past colleagues and bosses. Tell them you’re going freelance soon. Save up some cash. Then jump ship.
Other than going brand side, are there any related fields that pay well?
I’ve seen people go into consulting but then consulting people also want to move in-house
I honestly had a very hard time switching industries and working in house is very hard to get in.
I went in-house as a contractor and have been working there for the past year. It’s boring but I’m a writer and they pay me 1K a day so I can’t be mad.
It’s a 1099 tho so I do have to pay 35% in taxes on that and for my own healthcare
