Has anyone moved into a non-legal role at a tech company after big law? Trying to figure out what else is out there if I do not want to go in house in a legal capacity.

Yes, I know folks that have leveraged BL “managerial” experience to get things like program management roles at FAANG. Once in the door, much easier to move laterally if you’re good. All these folks have been real hustlers — a bit different from the typical risk averse BL associate.

like

Any suggestions on best path to get here? When should I lateral?

If you don’t get traction here you could cross-post over to the Law bowl. I’m interested in seeing responses!

Good idea

Lots of options—ops, client/customer facing, people management, delivery/product. Depends a ton on the company, what you actually like and want to do, your skill set, etc.

Additional Posts in Law Exit Opportunities

Has anyone made the transition from non-profit and small firm practice to federal government, big law, in-house? I’m a special education parent attorney at a small firm and I’ve spent my legal career in the education and juvenile areas of the law working for 2 non-profits before ending up at the firm. However, I’m just exhausted, unmotivated, and and looking for a change. At this point (6.5 yrs of practice), is that type of transition even possible or am I stuck due to the practice area?

I have been overworked and overwhelmed at my current job for quite a while. This is my first position out of law school, small firm with large caseload, and in my second year of practice. I often think I should look for another opportunity elsewhere but I don't know that any other firms would give me the potential for growth and experience that I am getting here. What are other 2nd year associates doing at other firms? Trying to gauge if I really am getting more opportunities here

I’ve been practicing in both big law (many yrs ago) and now in-house for over 10 years. Quite often I struggle because I don’t find work fulfilling. I’ve been in industries that allegedly have greater cause (healthcare) but was eventually disappointed by the corporate bureaucracy and went to a cutting-edge tech company for intellectual stimulation. Still I struggle. Should I try public interest? Not that I don’t need the money but it’s hard to work when I am so detached and find it meaningless

I am looking to enter big law. I had a clerkship on a state Business Calendar and am a current first year litigation associate where I have prepared for a trial, taken and defended depositions, and have extensive motion writing practice in tech, business, and employment cases. I’m a fifth year associate who is ready to get out of litigation (and private practice altogether). I’ve only ever done professional malpractice (legal, med mal, etc) and feel like those skills will not transfer as well if I had done transactional work.
