Mentor
That’s what I assumed but it wasn’t. 2 years on a family business and walked back into a job at a now more highly ranked (but much less historically prestigious) firm at higher pay with basically no interview. Felt like a fool for having been terrified the whole 2 years I’d never get into biglaw. The kicker was that hard ass mentor from old firm who never ever gave compliments said “meh, you can do better than that” when I described the offer!
Have you thought about trying to swing a leave of absence? I’ve known people to swing it for 3ish months. But still a fair question since obviously it’s a bit of a risk to ask.
If you are liked at your firm and you deliver quality work, you may be surprised. Tie it to mental health and they maybe flexible and allow a 3ish month leave of absence. My firm has allowed many people do that.
Guy from my firm quit to go travel for 6 months and then got a good job in-house at a client of the firm’s on his return (litigation)
He clerked and then worked for four years across 2 firms before that
Just skip the leave and go in-house, will feel like a vacation.

It’s always easier to find a job when you already have one. I know plenty people that left without something lined up (or never returned from parental leave), and it took them a while to find another gig, and some couldn’t get the type of job they wanted so they had to, in their words, settle. Overall, those that left without something lined up took much longer to find a new job than those who interviewed and did the job search while still employed.

I know of one person who took a year off and traveled with his family, came back to the same firm and it was fine. I think it’s definitely doable if you’re a valued associate and you’ve established a reasonable track record, and you’re not coming back into a recession/layoff period (big if right now). I mean, people take 3-6 months off all the time for parental leave and that’s nbd, unless you’ve already taken like 4 such leaves, taking time off for other family reasons seems like the same-ish thing.
I quit and took a 3 month vacation but I lined up my job beforehand and just had a late start date
