Ok, I’m preaching to the choir here, but I’m a mid-level lateral, and I get most of my work now from an absolutely toxic partner that I am basically assigned to (firm is very siloed and partner doesn’t like sharing associates). I am getting to the point where I don’t take the tirades personally, but the obvious lack of good leadership leaves me incredibly unmotivated. But the learned helplessness also means that I procrastinate—like right now! Send help!

Do you work for my ex-boss? I was a lateral into the same exact position. It left me hating life and really hating work. Just thinking back to the pointless hourlong late night phone call lectures (that had to happen RIGHT NOW) makes me cringe. Firm was similarly siloed, and this partner made it very difficult to branch out to others. Work for him, you’re stuck with him.

Only option, I found out, was to leave. I’m in house now and it is great. I receive more good feedback and gratitude in a week here than the old partner gave me in a year. And it’s amazing what being made to feel appreciated as opposed to worthless will do for the psyche.

I was in the same situation. My advise would be to run ASAP (like me and 6 other attorneys who worked for toxic partner in 2 years)

Have you ever tried to interrupt the tirades with something to tge effect of "Please don't speak to me this way."

And, no, because this partner apparently brings in a lot of money. Half a dozen team members have left the firm because of this partner/group since I got here. So, basically, I don’t want to piss off this already inflamed person.

Talk to HR. Ask a hypothetical question about how they would handle a situation and then describe your situation. That way you can see if they understand how to handle these issues. If they don’t get it, find a trusted young partner and describe the situation and ask advice. If they say to leave, leave now while the market is good. If they are willing to help you, perhaps they will get you on some other work instead of seeing you leave. But see if they know how significant the issue is before you jump ship.

A partner put me in charge of a specific project that I ran independently. Things were going well. The client began asking me to do more and more, including revamping their system and internal trainings. The client even gave me a litigation matter. Suddenly, the partner became more involved. I was removed from meetings concerning the revamping, my trainings were cancelled, and he started micromanaging. He has now sidelined me from the project and trash talked me to the client. I am very upset.

How do you deal with stub years who are exceptionally bad? I’m not talking about general cluelessness which is completely expected and understandable, but turning in work product riddled with incomprehensible, grammatically incorrect sentences that would fail middle school English. This is honestly the worst I’ve ever seen. Would you just avoid in the future or raise this with a partner? I don’t even know how to talk to this person about this…

What you should do when dealing with a very toxic worker that keep on sending passive aggressive messages to you as well as in group chat and email.
Things like when you answer his question he respond: I know that
Or when he keeps on saying my change requests were just minor in group meeting but actually not.
And keep on saying how hard he works when he clearly wasn’t and already underperformed compared to an intern level.

How to not let this toxic co-worker not poison me any further?

PSA - We are headed into a self-imposed economic slow down. Now is not the time to lateral but if you do, I would make sure you are at a recession-proof practice or firm. The top law firms will be okay (they always are) but if you are part of a larger group of associates with no work, you are likely to be axed. Latham did it in the 2008 and 2011 and it will happen again. If you are an associate or really anyone but a rainmaker, you are expendable.
