Has anyone started and completed their CPA while working full time? My service line doesn’t require it for promotion but I want to start the process and finally do it. How long did it take you to complete? Do you think KPMG would give me fresh Becker materials? (I was originally going to do it while in my master program but had a personal injury).

I’m currently going through the process of studying while working, but the difference is I’m in industry so it is way more manageable. My fiancée is in public and she is struggling to get her exams done. I’d recommend giving it your all once busy season is over.

like

I started last February and finished in October. I worked full time in tax and had essentially a never ending busy season. I pretty much gave myself just enough time after I received one score to study for and pass the next one. It just takes some discipline to make yourself study as much as you feel you need to.

like

Yeah I’m in FDD and it’s pretty much a never ending busy season as well 🤣 I’m hoping I can get this knocked out as quick as possible!

I would ask your PML how that would work/requesting process. I’m sure they would be more than happy to send you the Becker materials! I studied full time with multiple busy seasons/personal breaks and it took me about a year. I think you can definitely shorten than timeframe what with no commute at the moment and some serious dedication! I goofed off a bit and didn’t study hard enough for some so had to retake a couple. Good luck OP!

like

You’re welcome! It’s definitely difficult to do while working full time but doable!

Yes, way back when you had to take all 4 parts in one sitting. The earlier you can get it done in your career, the better. Work and life responsibilities generally increase the older you get.

like

Yes, did it with kids as well. Took me 10ish months

uplifting

I had a couple “false starts” in studying, was meant to start after I graduated, then tried to start again at the beginning of my first busy season (that was a bad choice).

Finally actually started studying in August after I had been working for almost a year. I used vacation time here and there to study and paced my exams about two months apart. I should’ve been done much sooner but when COVID first hit scheduling exams was a nightmare so that added months to my last exam, but I passed right before my two year mark with the firm. So it took me a year and a month or so all in while working. It’s doable but you’re going to have to miss out on some things. I went from studying into busy season into COVID times and damn do I miss having a life.

like

Wow that is ROUGH timing from one social life killer to the next. I appreciate this input though as I think I’m becoming more and more okay with missing out on things even if everything opens up and covid miraculously goes away tomorrow.

Just as an update for anyone else out there who didn’t sit for the exam: KPMG has a re-enroll program with Becker so now I’m getting my materials again and the online course!!

like

I took the exams while working full time as a staff. Its rough, but the motivation to get it done and over with was enough for me to sacrifice a year of free time to get it done.

like

I went to grad school and took all CPA exams while working full time and helping raise a newborn. It’s possible, you just have to make it important.

It look me 18 months to study and pass all 4 exams. Half of that time I was working for the government, the other half as staff at a small firm. Not a quick path like some have managed, but still at CPA at the end of it.

like

You guys are amazing thank you!

Becker also provides online classes. Depending on how you learn, these might be more helpful than the prerecorded lectures

like

I did it working full time with kids. Took me 15 months, I failed Auditing once, rest were first time passes. Becker was awesome.

like

I am currently in the process of taking the cpas while working full time.

Good luck! 🍀

Did kpmg already give you Becker material? Or if you get it would it be the first time?

And Becker will electronically have the updated books you can just view online

Any info on when the discussions for mid-year promotion are happening? I understand that ppl will get to know between November 11-15.

Career dev advice needed. Being offered a promotion (would be reporting to my current skip and managing/growing a team). The role is global subsidiary management/governance. But the work does not appeal to me, I’ve been doing some of it and it’s so much admin and people management. I’m not practicing law at all. Love my current IC role and manager, get to work on strategic transactions and closer to the business. If my goal is head of corp legal one day, should I suck it up and go for it? Thnx!

Hi all! I work at a nonprofit and am looking to leave the organization. As I browse available positions in my area, I’m realizing there is a LOT of crossover between my current org and others, for example shared board members, folks who are on our board and employed at one of the institutions I’m interested in, etc.. Is there a way to say “my current org doesn’t know I’m looking, so please treat my interest with discretion” that doesn’t raise red flags? Thanks!

I know that some other associates at my level are approximately 30% behind other associates in hours on a month to month basis. Yet all of these associates say they are “at capacity”, and myself and another associate still end up being assigned work instead of them. How do we handle this? For reference, all associates are around the firms minimum requirement, it’s just that a few of us are 30+% over and it is leading to burnout.
