Has anyone taken the pay cut to work in sports or know of fellow consultants who have?

Got an offer for a strategy manager role at my dream sports organization. Great role, team (all ex MBB), and timing to join the organization, but it’s a 35% pay decrease.

I have no major personal constraints at this point in my life so if there was ever a time to try it, it’s now. But also not sure if there is fallacy in taking a pay cut for your dream job.

Go for it unless it produces a lot of financial pain, you probably will always earn more than this company could offer. If it doesn’t suit you can rebound to your current firm at the previous salary.

Is the team well known enough to give you credibility and wow factor if you want to return to consulting/high profile job later? If so, go for it. Will you struggle to get out if you spend several years in badminton or pickleball? Reconsider.

I spent several years in sports that no one cared about and I regret it, but yours seems like it won’t shut doors for you later. Most jobs are temporary, and even more so if they pay poorly, so always think about the exit.

How dare you insult pickleball like that! 😆

The cooler the job, the lower the pay.

I cannot agree more with you as I engage in the coolest activities - cooking, watching the WC on TV, and lazing out - through the weekend.

Definitely a passion project that several former consultants took out of my business school.

I guess it all works out if you end up being the GM of the Yankees

You can also all but guarantee a boomerang back to consulting from a prestige job like that.

Do it!

Pick up in consulting 2 years from now if the writing is on the wall that financial goals won't be met long term. A two year break won't tank your retirement.

like

It sounds like you got the job I was interviewing for 😂
Happy for you!
I was doing some analysis to see if I could still maintain my standard of living at the lower salary (eg rent) and retirement savings goals.
Think about if there is upward mobility within the org over the long-term. If it’s an org that you really want to get into for the long-term, it may be worth the hit.

Shoot me a DM, I used to work in sports for nine years, happy to chat

I actually made a similar decision not exactly to yours (tech > another industry that pays low) and took a pay cut. Initially I was pretty worried but I feel like it’s been a great decision so far. I like my team and the problems I’m tackling are ones that are far more interesting to me. Happy to chat over DM if it would help.

like

That’s awesome! How did you hear about the job to begin with? Kind of my dream, too

like

Professional sports has chronically low pay because they prey on people who get fulfillment about being able to tell people, “I work for X team.”

like

My partner works in data science and took a 50% pay cut to work his dream role in sports. He is probably the happiest person I’ve ever met as it relates to work, and he could stomach the pay decrease because he didn’t experience lifestyle inflation at his prior role. There are some days where we talk about the impact having significantly lower pay has on him, but it’s so quickly dwarfed by how much he enjoys and finds fulfillment in his work.

likeuplifting

Just remember what’s really important to you. Everybody’s situation is unique but if you’re in good control of your finances (spending, investing, etc.) that can cushion the blow of a 35% decrease. IMO it’s worth it because at least you won’t be wondering “what if…?” And of course, like others have said, consulting isn’t going anywhere so if you somehow get into a situation where you need to go back to consulting it won’t be tough to do so. Rooting for you! 🥳

like

Go for it.

Took a 20% paycut to work in sports from a post-MBA consulting gig. Some projects are far more interesting than my previous consulting projects and others are slightly more interesting. All ex-MBB is interesting…not your typical background at sports orgs

If you're really passionate about sports, and have the financial means to take that pay cut, maybe look at it as a temporary thing. Does the job come with other perks that would out weight the pay cut (free season tickets, field/court passes, etc)?

like

OP was it the Man U role…..

35% is too much

Go for it.

I know several who have done it without regrets. Unlike me they have a passion for sports.

Note the hours generally arent great and likewise job security is merely okay. They do love proximity to practice and go to a ton of games.

Interviewed with Google, Amazon, Cisco, McKinsey, and a few others and every-time there is something that is not a match... are the hiring managers looking for like 100% match?
