McKinsey & Company I did my final round with McKinsey today, and I I received a rejection call from the partner today. However, he said I did really great and wants to keep in touch with me. He also mentioned that I should reapply in 6 months. Does anyone have any similar experience? Do I have a better chance if I reapply next time?McKinsey & Company

I would try to find some threads of common interest / how you fit into their work, etc. because ultimately you’re asking them to step out on a limb and give you a referral. Not that it’s a huge thing for them to do, but you’d like to ideally make it something they’re inclined to do beyond “hey we went to the same school and I want to work at Bain.”
You could ask about their path, any tips they have for someone trying to join Bain, etc. hopefully they’ll ask for your resume and then things go from there. I’d really caution against a conversation and then random “hey will you refer me for recruiting?” Because it can be awkward. I’ve had those and it’s just uncomfortable at times.
To echo what some of the others have said, don't go in expecting something out of him, he owes you nothing, and most definitely don't ask for a referral. Make it known you aspire to join Bain and you'd like this convo to understand his experience, why he joined and stayed, but don't sound desperate. Don't have too many questions prepped or you won't be able to focus on making this a conversation. A good outcome would be to have a great engaging convo, not necessarily about Bain, and then ask to stay in touch.
What is your goal? Getting into Bain or just networking or getting into Bain by networking?
Focus on culture and ask what makes Bain special. If the call doesn’t seem to go into the direction of a referral, ask their advice how they would best proceed with applying
Getting into Bain
OP: then make it known. You only have like 30 min with that person? Don’t beat around the bush. This is a practical world, your alum is a partner, he/she gets it. He/she doesn’t become a partner by being wishy washy. Be clear about your intent and be thoughtful about approaching it.
Curious to hear everyone’s thoughts, is asking if there is anyone else they’d recommend speaking with too forward? Would you imagine most partners, if the call goes well, will automatically offer to do this if you express interest in joining said firm?
Nothing is too forward these days. Seize the day and know what you want.
OP: what happened after all? Let us know?
He postponed. Figure I’ll wait till this Covid situation plays out then set up the call once the dust settles. Thanks everyone for your great advice 😀
