New to Fishbowl?
unlock all discussions on Fishbowl.

Moved from London over to the US. Itâs considerably bigger here so the âsmall cog, big wheelâ thing is a reality. Also expect to work weekends. And more nights. And tends to be expected. Upside is youâll be making considerably more dosh (although if you boil it down to hourly youâre probably better off staying in Sydney).
Me! đđŒ Iâm from Sydney too and currently in NYC. It all depends on your geography and your company. Biggest things for me are:
1. Lack of flexibility with leave. No one takes two week holidays (or, itâs a big deal)
2. There is an expectation to be âalways onâ. Have you read fishbowl?! Consultants are miserable here.
Other than that, I enjoy the variety of work I do. A much bigger market and economy to play with.
Thanks both! The lack of work life balance doesn't come as a surprise I guess. I took 4 weeks off for the 1st time this year and no one batted an eye, it was amazing.
A part of me thinks that the work will be more interesting or challenging. Bigger clients, more cutting edge. I'm originally from Europe and sometimes Australia feels 'behind' or small. But is the grass really greener - are the projects more interesting?
Not particularly OP. Depends on your industry though?
Much better lifestyle in Australia. But US market has better experience.
I think itâs a misnomer that things are definitely more cutting edge in the US. Your clients are not necessarily the the high tech companies you associate the US with. Theyâre heavy industrials or chemicals in El Dorado, TX or retailers dying in strip malls all over the country.
Iâm not saying there isnât cool work here - there is - but you should keep in mind that thereâs another aspect of America.
Iâm ex US Big 4, now in Sydney and enjoying it. Happy to chat, post a burner.
