Have been looking to go in-house for several months now, really tired of billing hours and toxic culture. Finally got an offer and am now having second thoughts, I get a sick feeling every time I think about how my comp will go down 😖. Feeling like maybe big law “isn’t that bad” and I should keep going for the money. Anyone else gone through this?

I took a drop from 4th year big law salary to a TC of 250k. I don’t check email after 5pm and work 20-30 hours a week. The pros of having a life again and being able to make plans to do something every night of the week outweigh the financial cons for me.

What is your base?

I was not in big law but had a decent salary and took a cut of about 25% to go in-house. I don’t miss much about firm life, but I do miss the check! If you’re going to make the move, try to trim the fat of your expenses immediately - then see where the margins are big enough to gradually add things back in. Otherwise, stay at the firm, trim your expenses and create a cushion so you won’t feel it so much when you go in-house later.

I’m here in FishBowl looking for ideas to generate another $60k/yr so I can exit this struggle I created for myself. Don’t be like me. 😂

How much of a drop? I'm in insurance defense and it seems like in house would be a boost.

I am looking to enter big law. I had a clerkship on a state Business Calendar and am a current first year litigation associate where I have prepared for a trial, taken and defended depositions, and have extensive motion writing practice in tech, business, and employment cases. Is it a waste of time to try and make a move to big law with such few years of experience?

I have been overworked and overwhelmed at my current job for quite a while. This is my first position out of law school, small firm with large caseload, and in my second year of practice. I often think I should look for another opportunity elsewhere but I don't know that any other firms would give me the potential for growth and experience that I am getting here. What are other 2nd year associates doing at other firms? Trying to gauge if I really am getting more opportunities here
