Burnout in general - really a product of this forced WFH situation - is a huge unacknowledged elephant in the room at my firm right now. They even sent the partners around to chat with junior colleagues one on one to try to figure something out. At the moment the consulting industry is so hot that we seem to have no trouble selling work - and people are getting the work done just miserably
I had a conversation with a Partner 3 months ago and he brushed off the burnout/increased hour discussion. We had a similar talk recently and his view changed 180 degrees. The last few months have been incredibly taxing on our practice. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us down 20% headcount YoY including our layoffs last year. Unfortunately everyone has worked more.
I escalated my burnout issues to my personal development coach. He flat out said that if I don’t bill 70+ hrs a week, it isn’t considered an issue.
I also got burned on a recent project when I billed my actual time. I learned my lesson after that project. So it feels like a catch-22- I won’t ever hit that threshold.
It seems mixed. I think people are aware it’s an issue, but they don’t want to do much about it. By the time the WFH committee and the “future of work” committee and burnout committee meet and decide on a plan, the pandemic will likely be over by then.
This! Super annoying that any internal firm idea has to move through the bureaucratic ranks of a bunch of committees, make sure every angle has been discussed, etc etc. this pandemic required people to make flexible on the spot changes but firms have been sooooo slow to respond
I don't think my firm has acknowledged any unusual amount of burnout or work stress that needs attention. There are the usual "take time off" and "the pandemic is stressful" comments, and we got talkspace as a benefit starting in January, but leadership hasn't messaged anything that brings it all together.
Their main focus regarding staff is hiring to beat attrition, not helping/retaining the people already here.
Thank you everyone. It seems like there is consensus that while there may be some burnout among juniors, it isn’t a “sky is falling” situation. Would be nice to get back to a point where there is less entitlement and more motivation.
Makes sense D1. Thanks.
