Have the option of exiting McK in LATAM (earning ~50k a year) for a role in San Francisco that pays ~230K. What worries me is I would miss out on McK MBA sponsorship, which could be a better investment of my time in the long term. Thoughts? Should I take it?

Lol two-three years of earning 230k more than makes up for the sponsorship. Except you take sponsorship now and go to McKinsey in the US right after MBA.

The transfer might not be as easy - I have a friend in McKinsey LATAM attending an MBA and trying to negotiate his transfer to another country, and he is not sure yet if it will workout in the end.

Leave! Is the role for a startup? MBA losing relevant by the day

Agree with all. Go for the PE firm! You can go for an MBA after spending a couple of years there too, although you wont need to, you are already at post-MBA level. Good luck!

You can make up the sponsorship in 2 years with your new role, and PE will look fantastic on MBA apps

like

I would have said take the MBA…until I read it’s a PE role. Assuming it’s a PE deal/investment team you’re joining, then I would not hesitate at all.

(For full transparency: this is coming from someone who has an MBA, McK, IB, and PE on my resume…so I may be a bit biased)

like

There is only 1 thing people can never take from you… Your education… If it’s important to you, I would say do it.

Just curious, why you can’t do both? Are you not interested in a part-time MBA or evening MBA program?

D1, I didn’t say degree which is the piece of paper… Yes, someone can take a piece of paper from you.

Someone can’t take your education though. Education is what you learned… The degree or piece of paper is what you earned after taking x # of courses and learning about x topic.

like

Take the role. People get MBAs to get opportunities like that. You can do an MBA later if you need one.

Bump the MBA , sounds like a dream role aside from it being SF.

Take it

Lol are you serious? RUN with it! Take the position!!!!!!

No brainer — take it

Take it !

PE comp will more than make up for the tuition coverage by sponsorship. If you have PE on your resume with McKinsey, won't be very hard for you to get into b-school or go back to MBB. Take the PE offer, b school has lower value add for someone like you more for people who were never in consulting/IB to get into those fields

I've become really jaded about consulting. I find all so often you need to tell the client what they want to hear to keep their business and I feel like so much of the what I recommend doesn't actually get implemented. I'm looking to make a career switch so I can both create and execute on my strategies. A product management path seems very promising for this.

Does anyone who switched from consulting to product management have any recommendations of h helpful PM books, courses, or programs?
