Have you ever had to deal with a disappointing raise? I (and all the other associates) got a much lower raise than we were hoping for this year. Since then, I've had a hard time staying motivated to do the bare minimum, much less go above and beyond.

The best advice I’ve gotten is do what you’re paid to do. Some of my coworkers burn out by working around the clock. I tell the new associates you aren’t paid to do that! (For reference, we’re in a midsize firm). Working weekends? Nope, don’t get paid enough to do that. If we were making biglaw money that would be a different story. But if you’re disappointed by your raise, then do what you’re paid to do and don’t feel like you owe them anything more.

Also for reference, I adore my partners and have gotten a ~13-15% raise each year over the last five years based on my work product and boundaries set in place.

Lateral. My old firm gave me a 2.6% raise. I lateraled to a firm that offer $25k more. Midlaw for reference.

Yeah and it was frustrating, got less than some paralegals that year. I also was so inept at billing and cutting my own hours. I’ve been astounded by the bonuses I’ve gotten since

In august last year my firm announced a market adjustment of $15k for all associates which was great to hear. They made the mistake, though, of saying that the market adjustment was not in any way related to merit/class based raises as the end of the year. Normally can expect about a $10k raise per in a normal year. At the end of the year they only gave a $5k raise and said it was because they were already doing a market adjustment. So I was happy cuz it was a $20k raise altogether, but my expectation was $25k. I would’ve been thrilled if they had just said btw we will take the market adjustment into account — but they explicitly said that was not the case. Needlessly shot themselves in the foot and left associates with a funny taste in their mouth when they could’ve just been honest and we all would have been happier.

In most instances that’s true, and it could be the case here, but my firm generally leads the local market paywise (as no firm pays cravath in my 2nd tier Midwest city aka not Chicago). Unfortunately, if I want to get paid more and work at a firm I would need to relocate.

I am currently during the period where review happen for associates and it's my first review. I want to ask for a lot more money than I make now and cringing at the idea of having the convo (but also my billable was 6 times my current salary, brought in some cases - not expected from associates - and got a tiny bonus that didn't even account for that last year which was frankly upsetting). I think it makes sense to ask anyway and show your numbers if you think you deserve more.

I got no raise this year, and only got a bump 18 months ago because I had to take over for the HR person. So…yeah…

You need to weigh it against what’s asked of you. When it happened to me I left. It just crystallized my leaning to do so.

Got a $5k raise to $95k and had my billables raised to 2200/year.

TLDR: I could never work with billable hours or where I couldn’t have some sort of direct impact on my compensation.

I’m in plaintiffs PI and this is my first job. Even though I was really happy when I got my first raise, I was pretty unhappy with my bonus bc of the way earning it was described to me at the beginning.

That was definitely demotivating but my supervising partner ended up reaching out and I hashed out all of my concerns (idk how he kept me around after that TBH) but he ended up realizing that I needed a clearer explanation of how my compensation works at a contingency based firm.

That was a few months ago and everything is good now. After that I was really driven to bring in business and I’ve brought in a few cases of my own….hopefully when they settle and I get my origination fee, I won’t be as concerned about raises/bonuses.
