I’m about nine months into this journey myself. I had always thought about it during my career. But it wasn’t until a client fell into my lap that I finally got up the courage to give it a go.
1. Finding a second client. Your first client will always come from a previous working relationship, so the hard work is a second. 2. Setting a meaningful difference between running your own business and working as a high level freelancer.
This is the truth. Being good enough, and determined enough to develop a STEADY string of clients (and in today’s project driven world, this can be exhausting) is a particular skill and calling.
I haven’t. I’ve seen what it takes to become a successful founder and I frankly value my life outside of work too much to do that. My hat is off to anyone who does, it’s not easy. But it’s not for me.
Agreed. Doing it is the literal definition of going “all in”. I have always enjoyed doing the work, but not also creating the infrastructure for the work to happen, pitching new work 24/7, making sure the payroll is covered every two weeks, processing free lancer payments, etc.

I know F all about how the money works in general.
If you are over 40 at R/GA I would def be thinking about this.
I don’t love this business enough to do that.
I'd love to, if I good business partner who sees eye to eye with me on the way the industry works. I say this as a creative spending my day today invoicing, prepping for taxes, and doing other back of the office tasks for my freelance business. I'd love to entrust to someone better suited—someone to manage the books, help with biz dev, and to counterbalance my worst instincts when things get rough.
If you're a creative or strategist with an account manager or PM who sees things the way you do, ask them to take the plunge. Ditto, if you're an account person and a have a favorite creative—ideally, with shared client relationships.
After that it all comes down to timing. I've had a few of these partnerships that I felt could survive the transition to being on our own, but the stars never quite aligned.
