It usually comes down to strong, fair leadership and open communication. When everyone feels heard and respected, drama has less room to grow. Building that takes time and trust.
Best kitchen job I ever had was in rehab, What a team, everyone so considerate and patient, yet probably more overall years of experience than you would find in most restaurants. It didn't even pay, I worked at 4am feeding inconsiderate goons. I hated leaving it. I knew no job was gonna be like that again. It was not easy, often humiliating work. The kitchen crew were some of the happiest people in a pretty terrible place. We were in it together, and we were going to work every day aware of the fact that we had to live together, not just make it through a shift. Absolutely loved that group of guys and miss them terribly every time I get a new group of lazy, selfish co-workers with no experience
Huh, never heard of anything like that! I have worked at places with minimal drama, but there was always someone who stirred the pot. I know it’s cheesy to say- just ignore the dramatic people. It’s like they feed off the attention.
I always find that a lot of what you're looking for, a more positive energy, just depends on the various personalities. If you get the right mix of people, and they all have a reasonably good attitude, things just go more smoothly. But if you get people who always bring the drama, it all goes in a bad direction. I guess managers can do things to foster a good atmosphere, but it always just comes down to the people.
I think that is rare, but sometimes you get lucky! It often boils down to leadership and who they bring into the crew. My manager is level headed and likes to hire people who are friendly and competent. Our team gets along really well. But I’ve worked for toxic managers who played favorites and created horrible workplaces…
